Tim Walz Called Trump ‘Fascist,’ ‘Threat to Democracy’ Weeks After Assassination Attempt

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat who was announced Tuesday as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, said last week that former President Donald Trump is a “threat to democracy” and called the Republican Party “fascists.”

Such hostile and inflammatory rhetoric has been widely blamed for creating a climate of fear and hatred that led to a gunman trying to kill President Trump at a Pennsylvania rally a few weeks ago, but Walz seems unfazed.

Waltz repeated the Democratic argument that Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), are “nuts.” But he continued:

These people are just weird. [Laughter] That’s who they are. There’s not much else to it. Don’t give them power. Think about it. Are they a threat to democracy? Yes. Are they trying to take away our rights? Yes. Are they trying to endanger people’s lives? Yes. Are they trying to endanger the planet by not addressing climate change? Yes. They will do all of that. But don’t treat them like heroes. Everybody in this room knows them. I know them, as a teacher. Bullies have no confidence. Bullies have no strength. They have nothing. [Applause] The fascists depend on fear. They depend on us coming back, but we’re not afraid of the weirdos. We’re a little creepy, but we’re not afraid.

Waltz said “violence has no place in American politics” and said he prayed for Trump’s safety. rear In response to the assassination attempt, President Trump expressed no concern that describing the opposition as “fascists” and a threat to people’s “rights,” “life” and “the planet” might incite violence.

He downplayed Trump’s heroism in standing up after being shot by an assassin’s bullet and portrayed him as a bully with no confidence or strength.
