Tim Walz hit with House subpoena for records on massive alleged $250 million pandemic fraud

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz Subpoena Records of a $250 million fraud scheme carried out during the pandemic.

The massive fraud scheme involved payments to a nonprofit called “Feeding Our Future,” which claimed to be founded to feed poor children in Minnesota, but actually appears to have stolen millions of dollars to enrich itself.

“The Committee will issue subpoenas today to compel a response.”

House Education and Labor Committee Chair Virginia Foxx, a Republican, said Minnesota Governor Walz has not responded to requests for information about the alleged fraud. While some documents were provided to the committee, Foxx said they were not provided in a timely manner and did not answer questions about Walz's oversight of the program.

U.S. prosecutors have indicted 70 people in connection with the fraud scheme in 2022, and five have been convicted of fraud to date. Other suspects are awaiting trial on charges including bribery, wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. Authorities say the stolen money was used to buy real estate, luxury vehicles and other illicit purchases.

audit Found The Minnesota Department of Education overlooked signs of fraud by nonprofits and did not enforce organizers to meet program requirements.

“Because MDE, under Governor Walz's leadership, has not responded to the Committee's previous attempts to gather the information needed to shed light on how the Governor and the Department of Agriculture allowed such misconduct to occur, the Committee is today moving forward with the process of issuing subpoenas to compel responses,” Fox wrote.

“This is an egregious abuse of a federal COVID-era program,” a spokesperson for Gov. Walz said in a statement to Axios.

Axios reported that some Republicans are nervous about the subpoenas because they could be seen as politically motivated and spark a political backlash.
