Tim Walz, a Democratic governor and former vice presidential candidate, received strong backlash for his remarks comparing U.S. immigration enforcement to Nazi police. During a speech at the University of Minnesota law school, he labeled ICE the “Gestapo” while criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration tactics.
Walz expressed his frustration, stating, “I’m absolutely sick of comparing the Gestapo with ICE law enforcement.” He acknowledged that some might find his comments too politically charged for the occasion, but he insisted on speaking out. He elaborated, likening actions taken by ICE agents to those of Gestapo operatives, describing how they allegedly operate in unmarked vans and detain individuals without allowing for legal defense or goodbyes to loved ones.
He referenced specific incidents, including the controversial deportation of an accused gang member, to underscore his point. The Department of Homeland Security quickly responded with a sharp statement, refuting his comments. “I’m absolutely tired of comparing the Gestapo with ICE law enforcement,” they remarked, noting a significant increase in attacks against ICE officers and emphasizing the importance of adhering to immigration laws.
Online reactions to Walz’s remarks varied widely, with many expressing confusion and anger at his historical comparisons. Some criticized his rhetoric, suggesting it was inflammatory and unhelpful, while others pointed out the insensitivity given the historical context of the Gestapo’s actions.
One commentator suggested that Walz needs to re-evaluate his understanding of Nazi history. Others worried that using such comparisons undermines serious discussions about immigration policy and law enforcement. Yet, there were also voices who shared personal sentiments, highlighting how deeply offensive such a comparison can be, particularly to those with personal or family ties to victims of actual Nazi persecution.
The White House’s quick response labeled Walz a “disgraceful loser” for his comments. Meanwhile, Trump’s immigration strategies have faced roadblocks due to legal challenges from political opponents.
