Friday’s Opinion Essay by Bloomberg Columnist Frances Wilkinson wrote an article titled “Tim Waltz’s Manliness is Scary for the Republican Party.” Assert Waltz’s background as a coach, military veteran and avid hunter has made him a worry for Republicans as he joins Harris as the 2024 Democratic nominee.
The article said Republicans have “scaled back their initial attacks on Harris’ race and gender” and are now targeting “Waltz’s traditional symbols of masculinity” that conservatives typically praise.

Wilkinson points to Waltz’s stubbornness, love of sports, and military service, arguing that his background “challenges the MAGA myth,” which he claims holds that both liberalism and feminism “threaten” traditional masculinity.
That traditional masculinity is intimidating enough on its own, but when this sharpshooter, state title-winning football coach, regular guy… [b]If we don’t have women running for president, what does that say about MAGA’s efforts to reverse-engineer the 21st century? After all, middle-aged heterosexual men [w]A man who loves to hunt doesn’t have to live in constant fear of losing status, and he doesn’t need traditional gender or racial hierarchies to justify his life choices. So why Donald Trump or J.D. Vance?
He claimed that the Republican candidate was driven by “anger,” and went on to say that the Republican Party is “steeped in fossilized, regressive, lazy bigotry. [and] While he is “pointing to the past,” Harris is “running toward the future.”
Quoting fashion writer Derek Guy, the article compares the far-left Waltz, who “picks up his gun to go hunting,” to “Ronald Reagan, who cuts wood and rides horses.”
The article said Waltz was a “danger” to former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, and added, “He’s not afraid of women. [b]There is a shortage of human resources and concerns about the future.
