Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards Set for Knee Surgery, Expected Out Two Months

The Minnesota Timberwolves are grappling with a significant setback as their All-Star guard, Anthony Edwards, has been scheduled for an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee. This operation will sideline him for approximately two months, as reported by ESPN.

Edwards was termed questionable heading into the Timberwolves’ Monday night game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, which was part of a back-to-back series. He managed to play a full 41 minutes during that match, impressively scoring 47 points, although Minnesota ultimately lost in overtime, 127-125.

The injury appears to have occurred during a previous game against the Toronto Raptors, during which he was noticed grabbing his right knee. Timberwolves’ head coach Chris Finch referred to Edwards’ condition as a “daily situation” before the prognosis suggested a longer recovery than initially anticipated.

Interestingly, Finch hadn’t seemed overly worried about the injury being severe, but now, it’s clear that Edwards will indeed miss considerable time. He battled runner’s knee in the same leg last season, which caused him to sit out several games towards the end of the regular season. Additionally, he sustained a hyperextended left knee during the playoffs when the Timberwolves triumphed over the Denver Nuggets in a six-game series.

Throughout the prior season, Edwards missed a total of 21 games, which was a personal best for him in terms of absences. With the aim of a healthier year ahead, he had taken time over the summer to rest his knees. Refreshingly, he reported no issues during training camp.

Before this setback, the two-time All-NBA selection was performing exceptionally well, even making history by being one of just four players to score 45 or more points in each of his team’s first four games, including that standout opening night against the Miami Heat.

Now that Edwards will be sidelined, Coach Finch will have to depend on the bench strength, possibly looking to players like Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland to step up and fill the void during his recovery.

The Timberwolves will need contributions from their starting five, including LaMelo Ball, who is in his first season with the team, to guide them through this challenging period.
