Deadline Approaches for House Democrats in Texas

The deadline for Texas House Democrats to return to their duties is set for Friday at 1 PM. State officials have issued a warning that if these lawmakers fail to show up, their seats could be declared vacant, which would allow Governor Greg Abbott to appoint replacements.

In a post on social media, Gov. Abbott expressed frustration with the situation, stating that Texans believe those Democrats who leave the state to avoid voting should face consequences. He added, “If Texans don’t do their jobs, they’ll be fired.”

“Elected officials can’t escape their responsibilities,” he emphasized. “Democrats must either come back to work or face removal from their positions.”

On Thursday, House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced their intention to utilize all available tools and legal measures to enforce arrest warrants issued against absent House members.

Speaker Burrows remarked, “From the start, I’ve said that all options are on the table to ensure my colleagues who have fled return to fulfill their constitutional duties.” He referred to lawmakers who are now in other states.

Attorney General Paxton noted, “Speaker Burrows has swiftly issued a warrant for the arrest of a Democrat who left Texas, abandoning both their colleagues and legislative responsibilities.”

He further stated, “We are actively seeking all legal means to hold these legislators accountable. Texans deserve representatives who do their jobs rather than fleeing at the behest of influential backers. One thing Texans can’t tolerate more than a failure is being treated unfairly.”
