Time to Get Ready for a Major Conflict with Russia, Says NATO

NATO Secretary-General warns of a possible major conflict comparable to the World Wars if the alliance cannot curb Russia’s influence across Europe and beyond, stressing the importance of acting swiftly to prevent any escalation.

“The dark forces of oppression are on the march again,” NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte remarked during a speech in Berlin on Thursday. He indicated that a world war could be looming if NATO fails to address Russia’s aggressive expansion. Rutte emphasized the need for sustained support for Ukraine, suggesting that it’s more advantageous to defeat Russia and establish a buffer zone than to confront it directly along NATO’s borders in central Europe.

Rutte explained that the objective of his speech was to discuss “what we have to do to stop war before it starts,” identifying Russia as the primary threat and China as a significant ally. He called for NATO countries to be better prepared for potential conflict, including enhancing their industrial capabilities and increasing military production.

He stated:

We all need to acknowledge that immediate action is necessary to safeguard our way of life. This year, Russia has become increasingly bold and ruthless towards NATO and Ukraine… Their economy appears to be directed towards warfare rather than improving the lives of its citizens. Nearly 40 percent of Russia’s budget is allocated to military operations, with about 70 percent of their machine tools dedicated to producing weapons. Meanwhile, taxes are rising, inflation is surging, and gas is being rationed…

…How can President Putin sustain the conflict with Ukraine? The answer lies with China. China acts as a lifeline for Russia, eager to prevent its allies from faltering in Ukraine. Without China’s backing, Russia would struggle to continue this war. A significant portion—around 80 percent—of essential electronic components for Russian drones and military systems comes from China. Thus, when civilians in Kiev or Kharkov are attacked, many of the weapons used often feature Chinese technology… While NATO’s defenses can hold for now, Russia—which has specialized its economy for warfare—may be poised to challenge NATO militarily within five years.

Looking towards the mid-21st century, Rutte warned that future conflicts would not be far-off engagements but would occur “on our doorstep.” If NATO cannot demonstrate its readiness to counter Russia, Europe risks enduring “a war that our grandparents faced,” he cautioned.

This potential war would be “terrible,” with conflict reaching every corner of society. It would lead to destruction, mass mobilization, and immense suffering. However, he stated it is still preventable.

These remarks are part of a long-term strategy by NATO leadership aimed at convincing member states to prioritize collective defense more seriously. Recently, the head of NATO’s military committee discussed the potential benefits of “first strikes” as a deterrent action.

“We need to carefully consider how deterrence is achieved through retaliatory or preemptive actions, as pressures surrounding these issues could increase,” he noted. The admiral mentioned Russia’s upper hand with aggressive tactics, given that it faces fewer constraints compared to the democracies within NATO.

While Russia claims it seeks no conflict with Europe, this assertion is often met with skepticism in the West. Nevertheless, President Vladimir Putin has communicated that Russia is ready for war with Europe at any moment, as part of a broader strategy to deter Western involvement in Ukraine. NATO maintains that Russia is merely biding time to prepare for a more extensive conflict in Europe within the next five years.
