Timothy Hudson's lawyers seek more time to consider plea agreement in Carnival Horizon murder case

The federal case involving a teenager accused of murdering his stepsister on a cruise ship has taken an important turn. Recent court documents indicate that the defense is seeking additional time to explore a potential plea agreement.

At the time of the incident, Timothy Hudson was just 16 years old. He is charged with the sexual assault and subsequent strangulation of Anna Kepner, who was 18, aboard the Carnival Horizon on November 7, 2025. This case is being prosecuted in Florida, and Hudson is facing charges as an adult.

Initially, the plea deadline was set for October 23, but it has now been pushed back to January, allowing the defense more time to deliberate. A judge approved this extension earlier this month.

In April, a federal grand jury indicted Hudson, and he initially pleaded not guilty. Currently, he is being held in a federal pretrial detention facility after a judge ordered him into custody back in June.

Prior to this, he was under house arrest with an ankle monitor, so the change in status is significant.

With this new extension for the plea deal, it appears that Hudson’s defense team may be working to arrange a plea bargain for him.

According to Anthony Strazza, a criminal defense lawyer who isn’t involved in this case, the stakes are high; the outcome could determine whether Hudson faces life in prison or not.

He mentioned that if Hudson’s defense is negotiating a guilty plea, it might help them avoid a life sentence, but it’s unlikely to be an easy process. Strazza believes the potential sentences will still be substantial.

Given Hudson’s age, even if he ends up with a lengthy prison sentence, he could potentially be released in his thirties.

Prosecutors have emphasized the severity of the allegations against Hudson, stating that he committed a “barbaric, intentional, thoughtful act.”

Even if Hudson receives a long sentence—like 20 or 30 years—he remains quite young and could still have a life ahead of him after serving time.

Meanwhile, Hudson’s defense attorney, Eric Cohen, chose not to provide any comments when contacted.
