Timothy Olyphant shares why he stays away from computers on the 'SmartLess' podcast

Timothy Olyphant recently shared some interesting insights during an episode of the podcast “SmartLess.” Despite living in a tech-heavy world, Olyphant, 58, revealed that he doesn’t own a computer. In fact, he had to dig out an old desktop and borrow a friend’s office to complete the interview. He humorously noted, “I needed a computer. Without it, I don’t think I could do the show.”

When questioned by hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes about his low-tech lifestyle, Olyphant maintained that all he truly requires is his phone. “I got the phone, and that’s enough,” he said. Bateman seemed skeptical about Olyphant being an artist without any tech gadgets like an iPad. Olyphant conceded he does have a desktop computer at home, but admitted it had become more of a project than a practical tool.

He explained the struggle of getting the old machine up and running, joking about how much effort it required to appear on the podcast. “A lot has been sacrificed by these players,” Olyphant acknowledged, showing appreciation for the opportunity. Despite his avoidance of computers, he pointed out that he enjoys the podcast, whether by listening or reading transcripts.

Bateman probed further, asking if Olyphant had ever considered buying a laptop to see the variety of content available. Olyphant responded, saying such a suggestion felt condescending. The conversation then shifted toward artificial intelligence, with Bateman curious about Olyphant’s lack of interest in technology. “This is all about AI… Don’t you want to know what all the fuss is about?” Bateman inquired. Olyphant simply emphasized that most of what he needs can be done with his cell phone.

Olyphant, who gained recognition for his roles in “Deadwood” and “Justified,” continues to impress with his performances in various projects like “The Santa Clarita Diet” and “The Mandalorian.” His unique approach to technology, or lack thereof, certainly surprised his podcast hosts and has sparked some interesting conversations about balancing tech usage in everyday life.
