Gotham FC’s Busy Season Ahead

With a packed schedule, Gotham FC is juggling various commitments.

“I don’t think there’s a team that works harder in this league than Gotham,” said owner Carolyn Tish Blositt recently.

Just three weeks ago, they celebrated a significant achievement by winning their first CONCACAF W Champions Cup in Monterrey, Mexico. On Tuesday night, the Empire State Building was even lit up in Gotham Blue to commemorate this victory.

This win has led to international commitments for several key players.

Back in regular season NWSL play, Gotham (3W-3D-5L) faced a setback, losing 2-1 to Kansas City and currently sits in 10th place out of 14 teams.

With two more NWSL matches to come, there’s a break for more than a month. The team is gearing up for a road game against the Utah Royals on Friday night at 9:30 PM.

“Our team knows that if they wanted it to be easy, they probably wouldn’t have come to Gotham,” Tish Blositt mentioned. “We have high standards because New York and New Jersey have high standards, and players come here to compete with the best.”

To illustrate, five Gotham players will participate in the women’s Euro this summer: forward Ester Gonzalez (Spain), goalkeeper Ankatlinburger (Germany), defender Jess Carter (England), forward Jessica Silva (Portugal), and a new signing, Denabad.

Forward Gabi Portillo (Brazil) is also set to join the Copa America.

Midfielder Rose Lovell is expected to reunite with the US women’s national team after recovering from an ankle injury sustained last weekend.

How is your summer going so far? Not a dull moment, I presume.

Gotham announced four additional matches planned from August to October, as they strive to defend their W Champions Cup title.

“I think people recognize how important this is in the global game,” Tish Blositt remarked about the Concacaf Trophy. “When we took over as new owners last year, we envisioned being the first global women’s sports franchise, and this is a crucial step toward that.”

Coach Juan Carlos Amoros noted despite recent struggles in NWSL games, he feels the team is still in a “good place.”

Gotham faces a crucial challenge as they aim to climb into the top eight for playoff spots. They’ve lost three consecutive regular-season games, which adds pressure. “If you’re at the bottom of the league, everything counts—every shot, every duel,” said player Berger. “If we don’t get it right, we could fall even lower. Every girl knows that. Utah has a strong team; they play attractive football.”

Unfortunately, forwards Midge Perth and Ella Stevens won’t be making the trip to Utah due to injuries sustained against Kansas City.
