TN passes law stating foods with vaccine material are drugs

Tennessee has passed a bill that would force food containing vaccines and vaccine-related substances to be classified as drugs.

The topic of edible vaccines has been discussed for years since COVID-19 vaccines faced backlash, but Tennessee lawmakers have tried to keep ingestible medicines under the radar.

HB1894 Under the Tennessee Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, a food product containing a vaccine or vaccine material is defined as a drug.

The vaccine or vaccine material is explained According to the state:

“A substance intended for use in humans to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against disease, prepared from the disease-causing agent, its products, or synthetic substitutes, and which does not induce the disease” A substance that has been treated to act as an antigen to a substance that has been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.”

The state House of Representatives passed the bill by an overwhelming vote of 73-22, and the state Senate passed it by a vote of 24-6.

Democratic state Sen. Heidi Campbell, who voted “no” in the Senate, called the bill’s passage “messy” and questioned its necessity. Campbell asked for evidence of “any instances in which food containing vaccines has been provided in Tennessee.”

Supporters in the Senate said the bill aims to ensure enforcement, although there are no concrete examples.

Campbell also argued that “the idea that this is in any way connected to the retail sale of vegetables, especially when those vegetables cost thousands of dollars, just doesn’t seem to me.” [to be] It would be troubling to pass a bill for that reason.”

However, there are some examples of research into how to incorporate coronavirus vaccines and mRNA technology into vegetables. MSN Cited the research project of University of California This was funded by a $500,000 federal grant. The goal of the study was to determine whether mRNA technology could be transplanted into the cells of edible plants, where they could be replicated and consumed.

In early 2024, researchers from Japan, India and other countries published research About the edible new coronavirus vaccine made from tomatoes.

The study found that an edible plant-based vaccine provided two layers of protection against ‘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)’ and was superior to vaccines absorbed outside the gastrointestinal tract. He claimed that it was effective. These “primarily cause a systemic immune response,” the study said.

The bill now heads to Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s desk for final approval.
