President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Justice Department is already facing challenges from Senate Republicans, which could significantly hinder or even stop his confirmation process altogether.
The Senate is moving forward with the confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who is set to replace former Attorney General Pam Bondi. Trump’s formal nomination will be submitted to the Senate on Monday.
Blanche’s role in the contentious $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and his actions during the January 6th Capitol riot have raised concerns among some Senate Republicans.

Blanche’s first hurdle is to clear the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina may hold the deciding vote.
Tillis has been a vocal opponent of the anti-weaponization initiative, even proposing an amendment to redirect the funds to the national anti-fraud program, consistently voting with Senate Democrats to block similar efforts.
For Tillis, Blanche’s comments and conduct regarding the January 6th events are significant points of contention. He remarked, “I wish they would never have said for a minute that the people who hit these police officers were righteous people,” reflecting concerns about garnering enough support in the judiciary.

Doubts about Blanche’s suitability extend beyond Tillis among Republicans, and he likely won’t gain Democratic support either during the committee or the eventual confirmation vote. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned Blanche for allegedly protecting Trump from legal consequences, stating, “using the judicial system to go after his boss’s political enemies, and making baseless accusations against the Southern Poverty Law Center, Jim Comey, and others.” Schumer asserted, “Trump and Blanche are cut from the same crooked cloth.”
Senate Minority Leader John Thune, a Republican, voiced uncertainty about Blanche’s chances for confirmation, saying it’s “hard to say” if he will succeed.

Thune noted that while many senators respect the president’s choices for key positions, especially since Blanche has been in the role previously, the current environment is unpredictable.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley confirmed that the committee is processing Blanche’s nomination and expressed confidence in his qualifications, stating he appreciates Blanche’s “commitment to transparency and support for law enforcement.” Grassley stressed that Blanche has been devoted to restoring law and order across the nation.
However, frustration persists among several Republicans regarding the management of the anti-weaponization fund, particularly in relation to whether January 6th rioters accessed taxpayer funds. Blanche’s degree of involvement in this initiative could heavily influence his Senate confirmation prospects, as Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska pointed out, “It depends on the extent of his involvement in this weaponization fund.”
