Former Blue Jays pitcher Todd Stottlemyre has shared new insights regarding the unfortunate passing of Duane Ward.
Ward was in Toronto for the unveiling of a statue to commemorate the 1992 and 1993 World Series champion teams when he passed away at 62, just before the ceremony on Saturday.
“With heavy hearts, we write this post as we gathered in Toronto for a special celebration and memorial,” Stottlemyre posted on X.
“I never expected that the picture I shared during our Friday night dinner would be the final memory I have with Duane Ward. It’s remarkable how quickly a moment can shift from joy to sorrow. May you rest in peace, Blue Jay brother and fierce competitor on the mound.”
Stottlemyre and Ward played together in Toronto from 1988 to 1994.
Ward is regarded as one of the top relief pitchers in Blue Jays history, holding the franchise record with 45 saves in a single season, achieved in 1993.
His standout season came in 1993, where he not only made his sole All-Star appearance but also excelled in the playoffs, securing four saves, including two in the World Series.
“Duane will be deeply missed by our fans, and we express our heartfelt condolences to his family,” the Blue Jays stated. “Duane will forever be a cherished member of the Blue Jays family, and we will always appreciate his contributions to our organization and Canadian Baseball.”
Ward was selected ninth overall by the Braves in 1982 but was traded to Toronto during his first complete MLB season in 1986, where he spent the rest of his career.
The Blue Jays paid tribute to Ward with a video montage and a moment of silence prior to their game against the White Sox on Sunday.
“You will always be remembered. There would be no back-to-back championships without your contributions,” Stottlemyre commented.
