A tragic incident occurred when a 3-year-old girl drowned in a well-known reservoir in California. The raft she was playing on was photographed, highlighting a moment of innocence.
Laila Rosillo, a resident of Modesto, passed away last weekend at Don Pedro Reservoir in Tuolumne County, as reported by local authorities.
At about 3:34 p.m. on Saturday, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a child who was missing, suspected to have drowned in the lagoon area.
This reservoir, situated near Yosemite National Park, is commonly known as Lake Don Pedro.
It was reported that there were increasing 911 calls indicating that the little girl had been found and that CPR was in progress, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The department’s boat patrol, already in the vicinity, continued performing CPR in an effort to resuscitate Laila until fire and medical personnel arrived. Sadly, she did not respond and was declared dead at the scene.
Support for the family has been organized on a GoFundMe page, which has raised close to $9,000 of its $12,000 goal. This initiative aims to help cover funeral and memorial expenses.
Family friend Yolanda Muro, who set up the fundraising effort, expressed her devastation. She shared that what started as a family camping trip turned into an unimaginable tragedy—something no one should have to go through.
Describing Laila, Muro said she was “a bright and beautiful girl whose smile brought happiness to those around her.” Laila is remembered fondly by her family, which includes an older brother, sister, and a baby brother—all of whom will profoundly miss her.
The lagoon at Fleming Meadows Recreation Area, where this incident took place, is a two-acre swimming spot with a sandy bottom, located near the picnic area. Established in 1971, the reservoir stores an impressive 2 million acre-feet of water.
