Tom Brady’s Commencement Speech at Georgetown University
During his commencement address at Georgetown University on Saturday, Tom Brady reflected on his remarkable NFL career, sharing insights and numbers that defined his journey.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion concentrated his speech on facing adversity. Naturally, this brought up memories of his time with former Patriots coach Bill Belichick, with whom he won six Super Bowls despite their rocky relationship over the 20 seasons together.
Brady humorously noted his discomfort with compliments, recalling how Belichick often pointed out his flaws. “I’m not good at compliments,” he said, adding that his longtime coach would critique him daily.
He urged the graduates to seek out mentors—sometimes, those who might seem grumpy or overly critical can help foster personal growth. “Even if that means a coach who cuts off his sweatshirt sleeve and yells at you all day,” he joked.
His playful banter continued as he expressed gratitude to a Georgetown graduate, even acknowledging Jets fans in the audience, showing his light-hearted side. He didn’t skip over Eli Manning either, hinting at their long-standing rivalry.
As he addressed the graduates, Brady remarked, “Sports are a strange way to earn a living.” He mentioned the constant scrutiny athletes face, saying that, like business, sports are all about numbers. He shared personal milestones: 23 seasons, 7 Super Bowl wins, and 3 losses—playfully taking a jab at Manning.
Brady recounted the Patriots’ incredible comeback in 2017 against the Falcons, where they turned around a 28-3 deficit. “I didn’t expect the day to unfold that way,” he admitted. “But sometimes, things don’t go as planned. You might feel superior, yet find yourself in a tough spot, questioning how you got there.”
“Overcoming doubt gives you the confidence to make decisions when things don’t go as expected,” he advised the students. When faced with overwhelming odds, you must choose between giving up or preparing to fight. “At that moment, I told myself, ‘Don’t be an idiot.’ Just go out and give it all you’ve got. Regardless of the result, I’ll keep pushing.” He emphasized the importance of self-respect, stating that losing doesn’t sting as much as losing respect for oneself.
Brady, who is now an NFL analyst for Fox Sports, is set to join the commentary for the Patriots’ Week 9 game against the Packers on November 8. It was quite a day for him as he also made an appearance on the runway in Times Square, modeling for Gucci’s Cruise collection show.
