Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) outshone CNN host Dana Bash in a nine-minute interview Sunday, undermining her story and poking holes in her questions.
Russian interference
Last week, the Department of Justice The indictment was announced The two Russian nationals were indicted on charges of “conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and conspiracy to commit money laundering.”
The story was used as further evidence of Russian election interference, and Bash repeated it.
“If that officer hadn't been there, if Kamala Harris had had her way, more students and teachers could have been killed.”
In response, Cotton not only explained why the story was untrue, but also focused on more obvious and serious examples of election interference.
“We should not knowingly accept money from Russia, Iran, China or other adversarial governments to try to influence our election,” Cotton said. “But I don't think it's too much of an exaggeration to say that a few memes and videos in a sea of political commentary are going to make a huge difference in this election, and they have in past elections.”
“What made the difference in the last election was the lies about Hunter Biden's laptop, which were lied about by over 40 former intelligence officials on the campaign trail,” he continued.
“And most networks, including this one, bought that lie,” Cotton said. “And it influenced the outcome of the election.”
J.D. Vance quote
Later in the interview, Mr. Bash repeated accusations against Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance that he has already denied.
Last week, Vance was criticized for casually saying school shootings were a “common occurrence” in America, when in fact he was lamenting them. It is believed to be the origin In a social media post from the Associated Press, The media outlet later deleted the post. The Harris campaign and Democrats immediately repeated this false framing to smear Vance.
“Do you acknowledge that school shootings like this are now commonplace?” Bash asked.
“No, absolutely not. J.D. Vance doesn't think so either. He says he doesn't want that to be a reality in his life,” Cotton countered. “And then this week it came out that the Associated Press misrepresented what he said, so badly that he had to retract it.”
The Arkansas senator then showed how Harris' policy preferences can have real-world consequences.
“While we are still gathering all the facts, what we do know about this shooting is that the incident did not end up as bad as it could have been because there were police officers on school grounds who were able to neutralize the shooter,” Cotton explained.
“Kamala Harris wants to get police out of schools. She's said that before. That's her position,” he noted. “If that police officer hadn't been there, if Kamala Harris had had her way, more students and teachers could have been killed.”
Cheney's endorsement
At the beginning of the interview, Bash spoke about former Vice President Dick Cheney's Vice President Kamala Harris' EndorsementHe described it as “really remarkable” but suggested it was bad for Donald Trump.
But Cotton didn't believe the story.
“At the end of the day, endorsements don't make a difference in this election. It's their track record that makes a difference,” he told Bash.
Cotton later explained that “this may be because Donald Trump hit his daughter.” [Liz Cheney] He won the last election by 39 points.
“I think most Americans are going to look at this election and compare it to their own record. Again, it's a very unusual election where you have a sitting president who has brought good times to America and you have Kamala Harris, a San Francisco liberal who has brought the exact same things to America that you see in San Francisco,” he added.
