Concerns Raised About Protestors and ICE Agents
Tom Homan, former acting director of ICE, expressed serious concerns on Tuesday about the potential dangers faced by ICE and Border Patrol agents due to the actions of some members of Congress. He suggested that their negative rhetoric could incite violence against these agents.
Homan’s warning came amid the political backdrop of President Trump’s pledge to aggressively deport undocumented immigrants, especially those with criminal backgrounds. During a segment with Fox host Laura Ingraham, video footage was shown of protestors confronting ICE agents during arrests. Homan remarked, “It’s disgusting. Many representatives in Congress constantly denounce ICE and Border Patrol. They’re fueling this hatred. It’s only a matter of time before something tragic happens to an ICE agent.”
He insisted that under Trump’s administration, both ICE and Border Patrol have significantly improved border safety. Homan noted that there’s been a substantial reduction in fentanyl trafficking and sex trafficking, emphasizing the life-saving efforts of these agencies.
A recent incident in San Diego highlighted these tensions: an ICE agent was filmed being surrounded by protestors after executing operations at local restaurants. According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security noted that around 250 protestors harassed the ICE agents, obstructing their operations.
This tension follows a chaotic demonstration involving New Jersey Democrats who were charged with assault during a protest at an ICE detention facility. Homan referenced alarming statistics regarding fentanyl deaths, asserting that immigration enforcement is vital to public safety.
He criticized the perception of law enforcement and illegal immigrants, suggesting that it’s become distorted, with criminals seen as victims. Homan also noted ongoing support from some Democrats for individuals previously deported who have connections to criminal organizations, further complicating the immigration debate.
According to ICE, April saw a significant number of arrests related to illegal immigration, reinforcing the ongoing challenges faced by enforcement agencies.
