Homan Responds to ICE Facility Claims
On Saturday, Tom Homan, the Border Czar, addressed recent Democratic assertions regarding conditions at New Jersey’s ICE facilities. He asserted that, after unannounced inspections, detainees were receiving sufficient food, had access to recreational activities, and were housed appropriately.
“Democratic politicians are spreading falsehoods. They’re encouraging protests based on these lies,” Homan told Lara Trump during a segment. This comment followed a recent disturbance at Delaney Hall in Newark.
He dismissed reports of a hunger strike at the facility, asserting that while one detainee attempted to initiate a strike, it ultimately didn’t take off. Homan also contested the portrayal of poor conditions, elaborating on his surprise visits to the medical facilities, recreational areas, and housing units.
“I made a surprise visit for lunch on a Saturday because I heard the food was terrible,” Homan recalled. “So, I joined the detainees in the cafeteria.” He mentioned that he had the same meal as the detainees, which consisted of spaghetti with meat sauce, vegetables, rolls, and dessert, remarking, “I couldn’t finish it.”
He highlighted that the focus should not be on the quality of the detention conditions, but rather on the act of detaining individuals. “What the Democrats want is to shut down detention centers and abolish ICE,” he added. This situation at Delaney Hall has come under scrutiny following an open letter from a detained immigrant, claiming inhumane conditions and lack of medical care.
The letter expressed a plea for understanding about their situation, stating, “We feel vulnerable… detained without valid reason,” and referenced hardship due to inadequate food. In response, the Department of Homeland Security refuted these claims and disclosed the facility’s menu, which includes meals like chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak, asserting that detainees receive three meals daily.
