Tom Homan Confronts Reporter Questioning the Necessity of Masks for ICE

Border Enforcement Debate

During a recent interview, Tom Homan, a prominent figure in border enforcement, had a heated exchange with Politico’s Dasha Burns. The conversation addressed the controversial topic of immigrants wearing masks during enforcement actions, as well as the need for ICE agents.

Despite increasing violence, a bill introduced by New Jersey Democrat Corey Booker and California’s Alex Padilla aims to prohibit ICE agents and other federal immigration officials from wearing face masks during most enforcement operations. Burns noted that some members of the public were outraged about this issue, mentioning that it is unprecedented in the country.

“We haven’t seen this level of attacks on ICE; it’s risen by 700% and there’s been a significant increase in doxing of ICE agents,” Homan argued during the discussion.

In response, Burns indicated that “attacks on police officers” have surged following movements to defund the police, adding that officers did not start wearing masks because of this violence.

“Please name the police agency that’s facing a 700% increase in assaults,” Homan challenged her. “I can’t,” came Burns’ admission.

Homan went on to say that the current level of threats against law enforcement is unprecedented, emphasizing the risks faced by ICE agents and their families. He mentioned that masks provide some level of protection, questioning whether those criticizing ICE for wearing masks have commented on masked protesters from movements like Black Lives Matter.

This sparked a brief back-and-forth, with Burns attempting to limit Homan’s responses. However, he pressed on, referencing masked protesters who committed crimes at universities and asked rhetorically if laws had been passed to restrict their ability to cover their faces.

“Sure, many people are upset about that,” Burns attempted to interject, but Homan continued to highlight the lack of restrictions on protesters wearing masks during unlawful activities.

He reinforced his point about safety by stating he would personally wear a mask if necessary, adding, “These agents are parents too. They’re not villains; they’re enforcing the law to help ensure safety in our country, yet they face vilification.” Homan described the need for zero tolerance regarding these attacks.

In recent news, the Department of Justice has made several arrests linked to a violent incident at an ICE facility in Texas on July 4, where an armed attack occurred, injuring a police officer. Also, law enforcement announced on July 7 that a gunman was killed during a standoff with border patrol agents.
