Tom Selleck hopes to work with ‘Yellowstone’ creator after ‘Blue Bloods,’ wants to ‘sit on a horse again’

Tom Selleck is looking to the future as his hit show Blue Bloods comes to an end after 14 seasons.

Selleck said he wants to return to the Western genre with a project headed by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan.

.“A good Western is always on my list,” Selleck said. “It’s nostalgic, and I want to ride horses again.”

Selleck lives on a 63-acre ranch in Ventura, California, and has appeared in six Westerns.

The actor first played a cowboy in the 1979 television miniseries The Sackets, opposite Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage, and Glenn Ford. The show is based on two books by famous Western novelist Louis L'Amour. That same year, Selleck teamed up with Jerry Reed in the TV movie Concrete Cowboys.

Selleck reunited with Elliott and Osterhage in 1982's Shadow Rider. In 1990, Selleck played his most famous cowboy role, starring as sniper Matthew Quigley in the Australian Western hit Quigley Down Under.

During an interview with Parade, Selleck named Quigley as one of his favorite roles. “I'm very proud that Quigley Down Under has stood the test of time and is still so popular,” he said.

“It was a great Western, and he was obviously an iconic hero,” Selleck continued. “I don't mind saying I was a little nervous about playing a role that John Wayne could have played better.”

In 1997, Selleck returned to the genre with the television film The Last Stand at Saber River, which won the Bronze Wrangler Award for Best Television Feature at the Western Heritage Awards. He starred in the TNT television movie Crossfire Trail, based on Lamour's 1954 novel of the same name.

Selleck's last cowboy role was in the 2003 TV movie “Monte Walsh,” set in the final days of the Wild West.

In a conversation with Parade, Selleck mentioned the possibility of reuniting on screen with Elliott, who starred in Sheridan's hit Yellowstone spinoff series 1883.

“Sam was great [‘1883’]”Sam is always great. We go way back. I love him dearly. I would love to work with Sam.”

Selleck joked that he hasn't been “inundated” with new acting offers, but added, “Some people are thinking about me.”

“I don't know where my next job is going to be,” he said. “People ask, ‘What do you want to do next?’ I don’t want to do Frank Reagan II.”

Selleck later revealed his thoughts on the possibility of appearing in a Blue Bloods spinoff, saying, “I love Frank Reagan, so I'm open to suggestions, but no one's ever really asked.” he said.

“I don't think he's going to retire and go away,” the actor added. “If he goes to a small town, I'd love to do more 'Jesse Stone' movies.”

Selleck played Police Chief Jesse Stone in nine television movies from 2005 to 2005. The film was based on Robert B. Parker's “Jesse Stone” series of novels.

In an interview with Parade, Selleck said he was not aware of any plans for another Jesse Stone movie, but did not rule out reprising the role in the future.

“Jesse is older now, so it's going to be an interesting challenge,” he said. “There were quite a few years between shows. That doesn't mean he's not a viable character. One of the things I get asked everywhere I go is, 'Who's the next 'Jesse Stone?' “When can I see it?”

Selleck admitted it was difficult to accept the end of “Blue Bloods.”

“The most difficult thing for me was that we had a 'Blue Bloods' family and we had a family of actors as well,” he said. “They're all my friends. I miss them. It's going to take a lot of getting used to.”

In an interview in October TV peopleSelleck expressed his disappointment at the cancellation of Blue Bloods. CBS announced in May that season 14 of the show would be its last.

“I'm kind of frustrated. For the last eight shows, I didn't want to talk about how Blue Bloods ended, but I wanted to talk about how it was a huge success. ” he said.

The actor went on to say that Blue Bloods was ranked 9th out of 100 in the top 100 shows of 2023-2024.

“I'm not going to be that nasty old guy who says, 'Get off my lawn!'” Selleck said.

“I don't believe in holding grudges, but if you were to tell a TV network, 'Here's a show you can put on at the worst time you've been given, and it's a show you can do on Fridays for the next 15 days,' “I guarantee you'll win on the night,” he added, “for years.” That would be almost unbelievable, he added.

He continued, “My frustration is that the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the beginning. So how do I feel? It's taken a long time to sort this whole thing out.” It will cost.”

The second half of season 14 of “Blue Bloods” will begin airing in October, with the final episode to be released on December 13th.
