Longtime Coach Stepping Down After Decades of Service

Tom Sheedy, a legendary figure in Long Island football, is stepping back from coaching after an impressive 30 years dedicated to the blue and gold colors of Massapequa.

“Those after-school hours with the kids—there’s something truly special about that,” Sheedy, who also coached varsity baseball, reflected on his time, emphasizing the joy he found in those moments.

Sheedy joined the Chiefs program back in 1995, contributing as a varsity assistant and taking on various roles within the junior varsity team. Recently, he spent the last four seasons nurturing young talent at Varner Middle School, igniting passion and skill in the next generation.

“His impact extends well beyond the field; it’s about the time, energy, and genuine care he devoted to the youth of Massapequa,” the program expressed in an Instagram tribute.

Yet, Sheedy insists the recognition should be aimed at others. “Honestly, I owe so much to them,” he remarked, mentioning his role in announcing for the Massapequa varsity team as they prepared for playoffs.

His journey to football is quite an interesting one. In 1979, he found himself unexpectedly coaching at Holy Trinity High School after he had applied for a baseball position instead.

“I had zero football experience, but they were in need of a coach,” he admitted with a chuckle.

Over the years, he developed his skills, achieving success at various schools like Chaminade and Kellenberg before establishing a long-running head coaching career. Interestingly, Sheedy prefers the assistant role, valuing the deeper connections with players over the broader responsibilities of managing a team.

As spring approaches, expectations will certainly change. Sheedy aims to lead again, hoping to reclaim the title of Long Island’s champion following a strong season leading up to the 2025 state championship.
