Patriots on the Brink of Another Super Bowl
The New England Patriots are set to make their 12th appearance in the Super Bowl, yet only a few players on the current roster have tasted the pressure of such a high-stakes game.
Having a head coach who knows the ins and outs of winning at this level is definitely a plus. Mike Vrabel, who once played for the franchise during its Super Bowl-winning runs in the early 2000s, has transitioned into coaching effectively. His leadership, along with the coaching staff, has been pivotal in reshaping a team that, just a couple of seasons ago, managed only four victories.
Now, as they gear up for the showdown against the Seattle Seahawks, what’s Vrabel’s message? Backup quarterback Tommy DeVito summed it up well: “We’re going to the Super Bowl to win the Super Bowl. That’s it. We’re not just happy to be there.” It’s clear that the team isn’t settling for mere participation this time; the aim is to clinch the title.
Transitioning from a mere four-win season to making it to the AFC Championship is quite a noteworthy turnaround. But, true to form, Vrabel expects more, and so does the team.
Interestingly, only five players on the current roster have prior Super Bowl experience: Carlton Davis III, Christian Ellis, Mack Hollins, Austin Hooper, and Milton Williams. Everyone else, including DeVito, is eager to snag their first championship ring.
“Everyone wants to be in that game, but there’s definitely a difference between just being there and actually winning,” he mentioned, noting how important that victory is for any player in the Super Bowl.
DeVito started this season with the New York Giants, where he became a fan favorite due to stepping in when Daniel Jones was sidelined with injuries. He now fits into the Patriots’ quarterback lineup after the Giants brought in new talent, making his previous position less certain.
While playing in New Jersey, DeVito was well aware of the Patriots’ legacy. Yet, he finds it interesting that two of the Lombardi trophies displayed in the Giants’ facility were won against the Patriots, highlighting a rivalry filled with intensity.
Though some have suggested the Patriots have had an easy path back to the Super Bowl, DeVito disagrees. Their playoff journey involved facing top-tier defenses, including a difficult game against the Denver Broncos.
“People think it’s easy, but not every team faces a double showdown with Josh Allen,” he remarked, illustrating the toughness of the schedule.
Ultimately, the past victories don’t matter if the current goal isn’t met. With Vrabel at the helm, the franchise seems to have found its footing once again. Now it’s about focusing on the next challenge, which requires total commitment from the entire team.
“What counts is that column that shows 1-0 after the game,” DeVito concluded, underscoring the singular focus on winning as the Patriots prepare for the big day on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium.
DeVito: More Than Just a Backup
DeVito considers his role as a backup to be crucial, but he also makes an impact off the field. Recently, he partnered with a campaign that involved surprising a fan who had to complete a humorous punishment for losing a fantasy football league.
On a snowy night, he showed up at a lemonade stand set up by the fan, making the best out of the chilly weather. Despite the freezing temperature, they managed to draw a crowd.
Reflecting on the experience, DeVito shared, “It was awesome. We had a lot of fun. Even if some folks didn’t get what was happening, they were still enjoying lemonade in 5-degree weather. So, we made it work.” He expressed eagerness about his collaboration with the campaign, noting their enjoyable experiences so far.
