Emails Expose Alleged Affair Between Texas Lawmaker and Aide
In Washington, a Texas Republican lawmaker is at the center of controversy as it was revealed that he exchanged 3,500 emails with his alleged lover, who was an aide. These emails included some that were described as “sexual in nature,” according to the distraught husband and his attorney during an interview. The husband’s late wife made a desperate cry for help before her tragic death, saying, “I don’t want to die.”
Adrian Avilés’ wife, Regina Santos Avilés, worked for Congressman Tony Gonzalez until her death from self-immolation in September 2025. This shocking revelation surfaced over a year later when her husband found “sexual” messages on her phone that pointed to an affair.
Congressman Gonzalez reportedly did not respond to inquiries about the situation and has accused Avilés and his attorney, Bobby Barrera, of attempting to “blackmail” him to avoid paying six-figure damages related to Regina’s death.
Adrian recalled discovering the affair, noting how his wife initially hesitated to hand over her phone, warning him he wouldn’t like what he would find. Upon reviewing the messages, he confirmed they included sexual content.
Barrera asserted the email exchange indicated a relationship beyond a professional one, though he maintained that nothing graphic was present. However, he remarked that the context was indeed sexual, with Gonzalez allegedly asking for explicit pictures.
Currently, Avilés and his attorney are having these communications downloaded by a forensic team and plan to share the details publicly soon.
Adrian Avilés expressed his anger at Gonzalez, stating that the lawmaker continued on as if nothing had happened, without reaching out to offer condolences following his wife’s passing. He emphasized that Gonzalez was not welcome at Regina’s funeral.
While Avilés and a former employee of Gonzalez claim the affair lasted no longer than a month, Adrian insisted his wife was not struggling with mental health issues, nor was she pregnant at the time of her death.
Adrian confronted Gonzalez after discovering the messages, revealing that Gonzalez’s response was rather nonchalant, merely telling him to “take care of your family.”
Barrera has been negotiating privately for a settlement of around $300,000 due to allegations of sexual misconduct and retaliation against Regina Santos Avilés.
In response to growing pressure, Gonzalez stated that he would not be intimidated. He called it appalling to see others profiting from a tragic situation and demanded full public access to the police report about the incident.
Barrera contended that key details were omitted from Gonzalez’s accounts, including the sexually explicit communications found on Regina’s phone.
Adrian and Regina’s relationship faced significant strain due to the alleged affair, leading them to counseling before ultimately deciding to separate in late 2024.
Despite serving in a prominent role, Regina was reportedly cut off from direct contact with Gonzalez amidst the scandal. One leaked text reveals her admission of infidelity, yet House Republicans dismissed the allegations as a smear tactic.
Last October, after the allegations came to light, Gonzalez dismissed the claims as an attack against him, mentioning that people were “throwing rocks” at him.
Adrian Avilés criticized the congressman for what he termed manipulative behavior, stating that Gonzalez seems to evade responsibility, labeling him as “a coward.”
Adrian expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his wife, emphasizing the impact on their young son. He voiced frustration about the ongoing scandal, stating he had wished to keep it private but felt compelled to defend Regina’s memory.
Regina, who had a history of stable mental health, tragically took her life by setting herself on fire, which authorities later determined to be suicide—though this conclusion has been questioned by her family and attorney.
Avilés revealed that he requested recordings of the incident not be made public, fearing it could harm his son in the future.
Barrera echoed these sentiments, describing Regina’s actions as a desperate call for help rather than a straightforward suicide.
As the investigation continues and tensions rise, a spokesperson for Gonzalez’s office has yet to offer a comment regarding the situation.
