Top 10 Best and Worst Fashion Choices at the 98th Academy Awards

Top 10 Best and Worst Fashion Choices at the 98th Academy Awards

This year’s 98th Academy Awards red carpet didn’t seem to stand out much; most actors opted for a monochrome scheme of black and white, showcasing creations from just a handful of major designers.

Here’s my take on the evening’s fashion, highlighting both the hits and misses. Enjoy!

Best Dressed: Rose Byrne (Dior)

Rose Byrne stole the spotlight in a beautifully embroidered Dior gown crafted by Jonathan Anderson. Celebrating Anderson’s new role at the brand, many actresses went with Dior, but Byrne truly made it shine.

If you think of “timeless,” this dress perfectly embodies that idea.

Worst Dressed: Pedro Pascal in Chanel

I’m just really over seeing Pedro Pascal dressed like he’s from another planet, thanks to the media hype.

If he had made a better choice for the Oscars, I would have been more than willing to applaud him. But come on—a suit without a jacket, paired with quirky sea urchin flowers and glasses reminiscent of a first-grade teacher? That’s got to be the worst outfit of the night.

Best Dressed: Elle Fanning (Givenchy)

Elle Fanning rarely misses on the red carpet, and this year was no different. She looked ethereal in a Givenchy gown designed by Sarah Burton, formerly of Alexander McQueen.

What’s even more special is that the hand-stitched wisteria vines on the dress reference the trellis from her childhood home. This personal detail really elevates the idea of fashion to something more meaningful.

Worst Dressed: Timothée Chalamet in Givenchy

I don’t know, but the vibe of Timothée Chalamet feels tiresome at this point, and he’s only 30. The rings on his fingers, that mustache, and those shrimp-like boots with baggy pants? And then there’s the otherwise stunning double-breasted white jacket—it just doesn’t work for me.

Sometimes, I feel like he’s still playing that Bob Dylan role from the movie; it’s like he really thinks he’s Bob Dylan now.

Best Dressed: Teyana Taylor in Chanel

My thoughts on Teyana Taylor’s appearance are a bit mixed. Much like J.Lo, she often ends up wearing the same type of thing on every red carpet.

But there’s something reminiscent of Bob Mackie’s Cher in her Chanel ensemble. You can’t argue with Bob Mackie, right?

Worst Dressed: Anne Hathaway in Valentino

Oh boy, we have a look that feels stuck in the past. The hairstyle from 2011, the dress from 2004, and a wide patent leather belt that screams 2008—this just brings back too many memories from economically tough times.

Best Dressed: Jesse Buckley in Chanel

This choice might raise some eyebrows; the large red sash tied around Jessie Buckley’s cute pink chiffon dress looks quite bold. Yet somehow, it works, whether it’s the color or the design of the bodice—it feels modern yet vaguely reminiscent of something Grace Kelly wore in 1955.

It’s a tricky balance to hit in today’s fashion world.

Worst Dressed: Alicia Silverstone

I honestly can’t wrap my head around how she stepped out in such an unfortunate dress. The drape at the back—it resembles a sagging diaper, and it’s just—you know, shocking.

Best Dressed: Mia Goth in Dior

There’s a noticeable decline in the delicate, whimsical style we used to see 20 years ago, but Mia Goth’s Dior dress brought some of that charm back for me.

It may not have been the most unforgettable outfit, but it felt refreshing, almost like a reminder of how pretty things can be.

Worst Dressed: Gwyneth Paltrow in Giorgio Armani

I hadn’t initially considered including Gwyneth Paltrow, mainly because I’d only seen an uninspiring snapshot. However, as I looked deeper, it was clear why this boring silk dress deserved a spot on my worst-dressed list.
