Top 5 pro wrestling matches to watch this weekend

It’s a busy weekend in the US with Memorial Day coming up, but it’s even busier in the world of professional wrestling, with two major promotions, WWE and AEW, both planning to hold pay-per-view events (what WWE now calls premium live events).

WWE in Saudi Arabia King and Queen of the Rings The show will take place in Jeddah on Saturday, May 25, before AEW’s annual stop in Las Vegas, Nevada. Double or Nothing Showcase.

So, here are the top five matches to watch from these two shows.

Cody Rhodes vs. Logan Paul

Content creator turned megastar Paul has been taking the professional wrestling world by storm since his WrestleMania debut a few years ago. He’s a natural talent, effortlessly slipping into a strong heel role and blowing away all expectations. He’s yet to have a bad performance, which is reflected in the fact that he’s been in the main event of a 40,000 capacity arena and facing off in a WWE Championship match against the hottest babyface in the industry.

He’s unlikely to win the fight, but he’s still the U.S. champion and it’s well worth watching his progress.

Plus, we’ll have an update on Rhodes, who finally finished his storyline by defeating Roman Reigns to become WWE Champion. Wrestlemania Over the last month, he has been trying to establish himself as a champion and Paul is going to help him establish himself as a champion.

King of the Ring Finals

As of this writing, the final match of the semi-final tournament has yet to take place, so we don’t know what the actual match will be yet – it’s scheduled to be Randy Orton vs. Tama Tonga. smack down The winner will advance to face the hard-hitting former Intercontinental Champion, GUNTHER.

King of the Ring has long been thought of as a tournament to determine the next big star, a chance for fans to see a rising star before the organization puts its rocket on their back, and with Triple H in charge creatively, it seems like we’re returning to that mindset.

That’s why it’s exciting to see Gunter there. Perhaps no wrestler is more prepared for a big challenge to the top, and a historic win in Jeddah could very well be the start of it. Of course, Tonga is a member of Bloodline and his storyline has plenty of intrigue, but Orton also offers a compelling perspective, having never won a tournament in his 20-year career in the industry.

Queen of the Ring Finals

This tournament is important for a few reasons: First, there has only ever been one Queen of the Ring, won by Zelina Vega in 2021. With no medical issues this time around, we can be sure there will be a new champion.

And no matter who wins, whether it’s the newly-convened Lyra Valkyrie or the winner of the semifinal match between Bianca Belair and Nia Jax, they Championship Match in Summer Slam.

But perhaps most importantly, WWE continues to feature women in shows held in Saudi Arabia, a country known for its repression of women’s rights. While there are still many issues with the company hosting events there, the fact that we’ve come to expect to see multiple women’s matches at these shows is worth pointing out (and worth noting).

Anarchy in the Arena

AEW is relying heavily on the success of a major power struggle between The Young Bucks’ real-life EVPs Matthew and Nicholas Jackson and the wrestlers loyal to owner Tony Khan. was born Real problems behind the scenes at the company – including behind-the-scenes squabbles All In: London Last year led to the suspension of new Elite member Jack Perry and the firing of CM Punk.

But it’s also arena anarchy. AEW has done a few anything-goes, multi-man matches using the entire building before, and they’ve always been huge hits. Whether or not you’re interested in the meta angle of the battle between The Elite (The Young Bucks, Kazuchika Okada & Jack Perry) and Team AEW (FTR, Bryan Danielson & Darby Allin), Sunday night’s match is sure to be a taste of big, silly pro wrestling fun.

Willow Nightingale (c) vs. Mercedes Monet (AEW TBS Title Match)

This will be the first match in over a year for Monet, formerly known as WWE’s Sasha Banks and who appears regularly on the Disney+ Star Wars show under her real name Mercedes Varnado, and she will be making her AEW in-ring debut against the wrestler she was competing against when she sustained a serious injury. Ankle fractures last year.

One of the reasons Mercedes gave was Leaving WWE The aim of this bout in 2022 is to raise the profile of women’s wrestling worldwide, and this feud has certainly raised Nightingale’s profile. Heading into the rematch, the champion is looking just as impressive, if not more so, than her challenger, adding even more intrigue to what should already be a tense and entertaining match.
