Top faith-based universities in the United States

With a strong religious tradition, the United States is home to some of the world’s leading faith-based institutions of higher education.

Although this is not a complete list of the approximately 600 Christian colleges and universities across the United States, here are some notable Christian colleges.

wheaton college

Located in the Chicago suburbs, Wheaton College was founded by abolitionists in 1860 and has long been one of America’s most highly regarded Christian universities.

Wheaton takes the integration of faith and learning seriously, and its alumni directory includes a “who’s who” list in the American evangelical world. The school offers over 40 majors, with the most popular majors including Business/Managerial Economics, Psychology, and Biology.

westmont college

Westmont College, located in the suburbs of Santa Barbara, California, is a private liberal arts school with 1,300 undergraduate students. It is located at the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

It offers 26 majors and features off-campus programs that the majority of students choose to participate in. Some of the most popular ones include European Semester, English Semester, Westmont in Mexico, and Westmont in Istanbul.

taylor university

Founded in 1846, Taylor University is one of the oldest Christian schools in America.

Located in Upland, Indiana, the school has an undergraduate population of 1,800 students. Students can choose from 100 undergraduate programs and 61 majors, including education, business, new media, and exercise science.

Taylor also offers a selection of graduate programs, including a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in environmental science. The school features her two unique study abroad programs in Ecuador and Ireland.

calvin college

Calvin College was founded as a seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1876 by the Christian Reformed Church of North America.

We currently have 3,200 students and over 300 faculty members. He is known for his core curriculum, which is mandatory for all students, and includes his four parts: Fundamentals, Competencies and Skills, Knowledge and Understanding, and Cross-disciplinary Integration.

This academic research program culminates in a fourth-year capstone course that builds on concepts from the previous three years.

messiah university

Messiah College is located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and was founded in 1909 by the Brethren of Christ Church. The 375-acre campus is home to his 2,500 undergraduate students and his 173 full-time faculty.

Messiah features over 150 undergraduate majors and a variety of study abroad programs. During the 2008 presidential campaign, the school made national news for its Compassion Forum, where candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton answered questions about faith and politics.

Rich in tradition, “Messiah” features a “creeking” in which a recently engaged student and birthday celebrant are thrown into Yellow Breech’s Creek by their friends.

University of the Ozarks

College of the Ozarks, located in Point Lookout, Missouri, is a nondenominational Christian school founded in 1906.

There are 1,400 undergraduate students and 30 different academic majors. The biggest feature is that tuition is free.

Every year, out of over 4,000 applicants, only 400 are admitted.

Instead, students participate in work programs and schools rely on generous donations. This “Hard Work U” requires students to work 15 hours a week during the semester and 40 hours a week during breaks.

Although not suitable for everyone, our focus on work and character makes us popular, and our affordability means we have competitive admission rates. Every year, out of over 4,000 applicants, only 400 are admitted.

bethel university

Located in Arden Hills, Minnesota, Bethel University offers 106 majors, 43 minors, and 11 pre-professional programs. The undergraduate student population is 2,800.

The school has its own college hymn and daily morning worship service. The school is known for its “Lifelong Pledge”, which governs student behavior regarding faith and personal morals.

gordon university

Gordon College is located in Wenham, Massachusetts, a northern suburb of Boston, and has a student body of 1,500.

In 2020, we announced a 33% tuition reduction, citing the need for affordable Christian education and the success of the Faith Rising Capital Campaign. Gordon offers her 27 majors, 42 specializations, and 11 interdisciplinary programs, plus graduate degrees in education and music.

biola university

Founded in 1908, Biola University is a nondenominational, evangelical university located in La Mirada, California.

There are 3,600 undergraduate students, approximately 2,000 graduate students, and 475 faculty members. We offer 47 undergraduate majors and 80 concentrations. All students, regardless of major, are required to take a 30-hour Bible course.

Ouachita Baptist University

Ouachita Baptist University, located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

There are 1,700 undergraduate students and 109 full-time faculty members. Its name comes from the nearby Ouachita River, which forms the eastern boundary of the campus.

liberty university

Founded in 1971, Liberty University is the world’s largest Christian university. This nonprofit, private Christian institution is located on his 7,000-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Lynchburg, Virginia. Liberty offers more than 300 undergraduate and graduate study programs for students across 16 campuses.


In recent years, Liberty University has become a leader in online learning. For students interested in faith-based degrees, the school offers a number of online bachelor’s programs in Christian Studies.

According to Liberty’s website, Liberty’s motto is “Knowledge on Fire.” This motto reflects our commitment to providing a world-class education based on Christian values.
