Democratic Politicians’ Juneteenth Celebrations Draw Attention
Over the weekend, some prominent Democratic figures made headlines for their participation in Juneteenth celebrations, particularly a rather awkward attempt at performing an African dance. New Hampshire State Senator Jean Shaheen was invited to dance by the Akwaaba Ensemble at an African burial ground in Portsmouth.
At 79, Shaheen represents a state where, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the African-American population will be only 2 percent by 2024. In a post on X magazine, she described June 1st as “one of the most momentous days in our nation’s history.” She expressed gratitude for participating, mentioning the event’s aim to honor those who fought against slavery and to recommit to striving for equality.

In Virginia, Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger was also noted for her animated participation, jumping alongside a DJ at a Juneteenth event in Henrico County. Reflecting on the significance of the day, she shared a post on X about the recent dedication of the African Landing Monument in Virginia. This monument honors the first Africans forcibly brought to North America in 1619, emphasizing Virginia’s deep historical ties to this narrative.

Recently, Spanberger was also in the news for her decision to exclude two Congressional members from a ceremonial bill-signing event. This action followed reports of their involvement in a “data center listening tour.” It seems the dynamics within the party might be a bit more tangled than they appear.
