Top GOP lawmaker, Hochul trade barbs amid speculation Trump ally is jumping in gubernatorial race

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Rep. Elise Stefanik, RN.Y. has already begun a barb deal in the 2026 governor’s race amid reports Republican lawmakers are considering running.

When asked about Stefanik’s potential bid, Democrats responded by saying they had heard from “people in the North” about Trump’s tariff policy and how it would affect relations with Canada in particular.

“So, no matter who I’m opposed next year, it’s going to be an extreme Maga Republican, and I look forward to that fight,” Hochul said Wednesday as he asked questions.

Stefanik, who has not officially announced the campaign, has spurred the governor.

“The worst governor in America responds by taking food and talking about “the people of the north.” It’s a simple reminder of Hochul’s terrible vote for “people in the North – the region she is the least popular in the whole state,” which says a lot because she’s not popular everywhere,” Stefanik posted on X on Wednesday afternoon.

“And the North Country voters will not forget her attempts to steal their voices and their votes. They will not forget what she has done to our farmers and our universe. She continued.

Cook’s political report ranks the race as “probably D,” but according to a recent Marist poll, Hochul is currently facing scrutiny of a 39% approval rating. The Democrats especially played against Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lee Zeldin in 2022 while he was in Congress. He has performed as a Republican governor since Gov. George Pataki won in 2002.

Stefanik was recently elected as UN ambassador to keep the narrow Republican majority as high as possible in the home.

“I’m proud to be a team player. The President knows that. He and I have multiple conversations today, and we are committed to providing results on behalf of Americans. And, as always, I am committed to providing results on behalf of my constituents.”

Hours before reports that Stefanik was considering his next political move, Trump posted to the true society, “Rep. Elise Stefanik is amazing!!” Sources told Fox News that the president’s allies have encouraged her to run.

On the Republican side, Rep. Mike Lawler, Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman and Bethany town manager Carl Hyde Jr. are also considering bidding. On the democratic side, Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Delgado and Rep. Richie Torres could become the main hochuls.
