Top highlights from South Carolina’s GOP primary where Trump won big, Haley vowed to press on

Former President Donald Trump won South Carolina’s Republican primary on Saturday night, providing some highlights and hints about how the 2024 presidential race will play out.

Fox News called for support for Trump in the South Carolina primary shortly after polls closed at 7pm ET on Saturday night. Trump quickly evoked a victory over Trump, a former ambassador to the United Nations and former two-term governor of South Carolina. nikki haley The victory in her home state moves the former president one step closer to winning the 2024 Republican nomination.

After the results were announced, Trump immediately took to the stage to address his supporters.

“It’s an early night and a great night,” President Trump told a crowd at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds in Columbia, South Carolina.

“We’ll celebrate for 15 minutes, but then we have to go back to work,” he added, referring to next week’s Michigan primary and the following week’s Super Tuesday on March 5.

President Trump did not mention Haley by name in his speech, but did mention President Joe Biden.

“We have great families, we have great friends. We’re going to be here on November 5th and look at Joe Biden and look him straight in the eyes, he’s destroying our country. And we’re going to say, Joe, you’re fired, get out, get out, Joe, you’re fired,” President Trump told the crowd.

Ms. Haley, who received about 40% of the vote on Saturday compared to 60% for Mr. Trump, addressed supporters after the campaign called and vowed to continue running.

“I’m a woman of my word,” Haley said. “Even though the majority of Americans do not support both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, I will not give up on this fight.”

“Tomorrow we’re heading to Michigan, and we’ll be heading to Super Tuesday states for the rest of next week.”

Haley’s campaign, which won 7 percent of independent voters by about 19 points Saturday night, announced a multimillion-dollar national cable ad campaign ahead of Super Tuesday.

Nearly 800 delegates will gather on Super Tuesday, and over 150 delegates will be up for grabs over the next two weeks. Among the states holding contests on Super Tuesday are delegate-rich California and Texas, with other large states such as Florida, Illinois and Ohio also slated to hold contests. Winner-take-all primaries Polls in many of those states show Trump with a wide lead over Haley.

The Trump campaign predicted in a memo this week that even under the “most generous model” for Haley, the former president would win the nomination on March 19.

Asked by Fox News what she would do if Trump secured the nomination next month, Haley quickly replied, “Let’s see if that happens.”
