Agreement Between Israel and Hamas
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed his approval on Thursday regarding President Donald Trump’s announcement about an agreement between Israel and Hamas aimed at releasing all hostages.
On Wednesday, President Trump revealed that Israel and Hamas have officially engaged in the first phase of his peace initiative, which entails the release of all hostages and the repositioning of Israeli troops to defined boundaries. Jeffries described this agreement as a “very positive first step” towards ending the ongoing conflict and pursuing long-term peace during an interview with CNN News Central.
“This is a very positive step in the right direction. We are all hopeful that this agreement is finalized, and that the hostages can be released and returned to their loved ones within the next few days,” Jeffries remarked. He also mentioned the potential to enhance humanitarian aid to Gaza, aimed at easing the suffering of Palestinian civilians who have faced hardship in recent times. He underscored the need for not just a ceasefire, but also for establishing a just and lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
President Trump echoed similar sentiments on Truth Social, referring to the agreement as a “historic and unprecedented event” for all parties involved, and expressing gratitude to Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their roles in facilitating the talks.
“All parties will be treated fairly! This is a great day for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, all neighboring countries, and the United States of America,” he noted, thanking the mediators for their efforts toward this unprecedented outcome.
Prior to the formal announcement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio presented President Trump with a handwritten note at a White House gathering, requesting immediate approval for the announcement on Truth Social, so he could be first to share the news.
The draft plan from the White House also suggests that Hamas should transfer control of Gaza to an “international stabilization force,” which would be overseen by President Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, with input from Palestinian experts.
