Top NFL running back trade options and free agents for three teams looking to add a running back

NFL Trade Moves and Rumors

On Wednesday, the NFL buzzed with news as several teams were actively looking to bolster their wide receiver positions. By the close of the day, the San Francisco 49ers made a move by trading for Skymoor, while the New Orleans Saints secured Devarnbele from the Denver Broncos.

So, what’s the latest from the league?

According to a report from Dianna Russini at The Athletic, three teams—namely the Saints, Cleveland Browns, and Kansas City Chiefs—expressed interest in trading for running backs.

The Browns are somewhat of an enigma when it comes to this chatter. Even though they selected running backs Quinsion Judkins and Dylan Sampson in the 2025 NFL Draft, plus added an undrafted free agent from Nevada named TOA Taua, the decision-makers in Cleveland might still seek more. With ongoing investigations related to domestic violence allegations, they could be pushed to act, especially since Judkins has yet to be signed.

The Saints, on the other hand, are going through some uncertainty in their roster. Despite adding VELE recently, they are now reportedly eyeing running backs. The situation is delicate behind Alvin Kamara, raising some questions.

As for the Chiefs, Isiah Pacheco is in the spotlight alongside veteran Kareem Hunt, and rookie seventh-round draft pick Brashad Smith has made a strong impression in training camp. However, Andy Reid and the coaching staff are likely hoping for another viable option in their running back room.

Potential Trade Candidates

Brian Robinson, Washington Commanders

Earlier this month, Robinson emerged as a potential trade candidate. He didn’t feature in Washington’s second preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, hinting that the team might be considering trades. The rise of rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt might be influencing this; he has seemingly excelled in training camp.

With Robinson in the final year of his rookie deal, it could be the right moment for Washington to think about a trade.

Tank Bigsby/Travis Etienne Jr., Jacksonville Jaguars

These two former college stars are currently vying for the lead back position under offensive coordinator Liam Cohen. Jacksonville has also drafted two rookies—Bhayshul Tuten and Lequint Allen Jr.—and with the way the training camp has been going, Bigsby might be maneuvering his way into a key role. At just 24, with limited rushing attempts under his belt, it might make sense for the Jaguars to keep him while moving on from Etienne.

New York Giants, Devin Singletary

Singletary’s situation with the Giants largely hinges on the coach’s trust in Cam Scottebo. If Scottebo takes some time to regain speed post-injury, Singletary could become a solid option, especially alongside projected starter Tyrone Tracy Jr. A healthy Singletary, with his veteran experience, might offer more value in the Giants’ young running back room than his past production suggests.

Jaleel McLaughlin, Denver Broncos

Following the Broncos’ selection of RJ Harvey in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, McLaughlin’s standing may be in jeopardy. The depth chart looks like Harvey and veteran JK Dobbins at the top, with McLaughlin trailing. If the Broncos decide to go with just three running backs, he could find himself on the move sooner rather than later.

Roshun Johnson/Ian Wheeler, Chicago Bears

This situation parallels that of Jacksonville in some ways. D’Andre Swift’s absence from the Bears’ first two preseason games has allowed rookie Kyle Monangay to shine as a possible standout option. Roshun Johnson is dealing with foot issues, while second-year player Ian Wheeler impressed with his performance, gaining yards and scoring touchdowns in the preseason. Depending on how it plays out, Johnson might be a candidate for trade.

As for free agency, options seem limited.

Here are some current free-agent running backs on the market:

  • Zack Moss
  • Jamal Williams
  • Gus Edwards
  • Ameer Abdullah
  • Chase Edmonds
  • Joshua Kelly
  • John Kelly
  • Chris Evans
  • Cordarrelle Patterson
  • d’Onta Foreman

These players could serve as potential targets for teams in need of running back assistance.
