Top Songs from the ’90s and 2000s Take Center Stage at the American Music Awards

2026 American Music Awards Recap

The 2026 American Music Awards took place on May 25th, and it reaffirmed something many fans have been feeling: the best music truly comes from the past.

The show thrived on nostalgia, showcasing iconic hits and references from the 1980s through the early 2000s, creating an atmosphere that felt both familiar and exciting.

Unlike the Grammys, where industry experts determine the winners, the American Music Awards rely entirely on fan votes. This year’s lineup encompassed a range of genres, from country to K-pop, mirroring current fan preferences. The event felt like a trip down memory lane, filled with moments that reminded attendees of the music that defined earlier times.

Fans were delighted by a surprise singalong of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, an electrifying performance from the Pussycat Dolls, and the return of legendary boy band New Kids on the Block. But these highlights were just the start.

Nostalgia peaked when host Queen Latifah made her way through the audience, spontaneously stopping to chat with John Rzeznick, lead singer of Goo Goo Dolls. She noted that their classic “Iris” was nominated that night, encouraging the audience to join in. Almost on cue, both fans and celebrities began singing along, creating a poignant, shared experience.

Later, Latifah recognized Ludacris in the crowd and quoted a line from his hit “Stand Up,” prompting the audience to respond. The energy was infectious, with fans enthusiastically joining in the call-and-response.

The throwback vibe was palpable, especially when Hootie & the Blowfish, who were named Favorite New Artists 30 years prior, took the stage to perform “Hold My Hand” and “Only Wanna Be With You.” The audience, young and old, were singing along, even a young fan who hadn’t been born when those songs were hits was swaying to the beat.

New Kids on the Block transported fans back to 1988 with their performance of “The Right Stuff,” while Fergie reunited with the Black Eyed Peas to accept an award.

Meanwhile, the Pussycat Dolls rocked the stage in striking outfits, presenting a medley of their biggest hits like “Buttons,” alongside a new single and a special appearance from Busta Rhymes.

In a grand finale, Billy Idol, at 70, received the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award. His performance reminded everyone that rock and roll is very much alive.

While new artists were celebrated throughout the night, it was the nostalgia that truly shone, creating a memorable experience for all in attendance.
