Diamondbacks Manager Defends Ketel Marte Amid Rumors
There’s been quite a buzz regarding Ketel Marte, the second baseman for the Diamondbacks. However, the team’s manager is stepping in to set the record straight.
Bob Nightengale from USA Today has highlighted some “inner frustration” surrounding the three-time All-Star. This is likely tied to past issues, particularly an incident from last season when Marte was criticized for being absent without leave in the Dominican Republic. Rumors floated around that he was feeling unhappy about his requests for time off.
These speculations were reignited when Marte didn’t play against the Dodgers, where Shohei Ohtani was pitching, due to tightness in his lower back and hamstring.
In response, Diamondbacks manager Tory Lovullo strongly supported Marte during a recent press conference. “I can genuinely say that Ketel Marte has been a key player for the Arizona Diamondbacks for a long time,” he stated.
Lovullo acknowledged the necessity of time off for players and emphasized the importance of consulting Marte’s opinion on such matters. He expressed frustration over the narrative suggesting that Marte is a poor teammate, saying, “That simply isn’t true.”
Lovullo continued, expressing a desire to dispel any rumors about clubhouse issues connected to Marte. “He’s a wonderful teammate, a great person, a loving husband, a fantastic father, and undoubtedly one of the top players in the National League. That’s what we should be focusing on,” he added.
This season, Marte has participated in 61 games, which is second only to teammates Corbin Carroll and Gerardo Perdomo, who both played 62 games. He’s currently dealing with a soft tissue injury, which may help explain his need for occasional breaks. Lovullo reassured that any concerns or complaints wouldn’t disturb the clubhouse dynamic.
While Marte has had a rocky start, his offensive talents could be crucial for the Diamondbacks, who are sitting at second place in the National League West with a record of 34-31, with playoff aspirations on the horizon.
Currently, Marte’s batting stats are .246/.300/.443, having hit 11 home runs this season.
