Tracy Chapman, Luke Combs’ Grammys performance of ‘Fast Car’ gets standing ovation

Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performed a duet of “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Chapman, 59, and Combs, 33, performed the song together on stage for the first time since the country music star released his own cover. “Fast Car” was originally released by Chapman in 1988, and the Grammys was Chapman’s first performance in several years.

Released in 2023, the re-recorded song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for the Recording Academy’s Best Country Solo Performance Award.

In a pre-recorded video before the performance, Combs explained why he decided to record a cover of “Fast Car.” The “Beautiful Crazy” singer grew up listening to Chapman with her father, Chester Combs.

Chapman spoke to Billboard this summer about the song’s newfound popularity following Combs’ success.

“I never thought I’d be on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” she told the magazine.

“We’re happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have discovered and embraced Fast Car.”
