MLB Trade Deadline Approaching
Only a few days remain until the MLB trade deadline, and speculation is intensifying.
The deadline is set for Monday, August 3rd at 6pm ET. There have already been several trades, including one involving the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Nationals. As the deadline draws near, the rumor mill is buzzing.
Marlins Open to Deals
The Miami Marlins started the season strong but faltered towards the All-Star break, losing their last three games before it. By mid-season, they fell off in the National League East standings. Recently, they’ve managed to climb back over .500, which puts them in a unique position as potential sellers at the trade deadline.
They might be willing to entertain offers for players under control for the future. Primarily, they’re focusing on offensive talent. Reports indicate that the Marlins are open to listening to offers for players like shortstop Otto Lopez, Xavier Edwards, and outfielder Heriberto Hernandez. Additionally, C/OF/DH Liam Hicks might be on the trading block due to the advancement of rookie catcher Joe Mack.
Mack, among others including pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Max Meyer, is reportedly on a list of players facing potential trades.
In contrast, the Minnesota Twins, positioned slightly ahead in the standings, are just three games away from first place. Their general manager, Jeremy Zoll, has stated that they’ll be looking to buy at the deadline, primarily to strengthen their bullpen.
Zoll mentioned that their recent winning streak made the decision to pursue trades easier. “We’re actively communicating on the phone and trying to do everything we can to find ways to improve our team,” he said, showing optimism about the team’s trajectory.
Market Activity Heating Up
Pitchers usually dominate trade talks as the deadline approaches, with Tarik Skubal being a notable name on various teams’ radars. Interestingly, reports indicate that catcher positions are also in demand this year.
Some teams, such as the Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, White Sox, Rangers, and Dodgers, are reportedly in need of catching help. However, a source noted a potential hitch: “We don’t have six catchers to trade.” The Twins’ Ryan Jeffers is mentioned frequently, but his market could be complicated by Minnesota’s desire to buy.
Other catching options include Hunter Goodman from the Rockies and Adley Rutschman; however, trading them would require significant concessions from their current teams.
Red Sox’s Turnaround
Red Sox fans could have easily lost hope in June when the team faced a dismal record. Yet, after a remarkable 15-game winning streak, they’ve managed to regain their footing and are currently above .500. This resurgence has prompted them to act as buyers, including a recent trade to acquire infielder Curtis Meade, though he suffered an injury during his debut.
Among names to watch for Boston as they seek additional help are Zack Neto, Jeremy Pena from Houston, and Miami’s Otto Lopez, yet securing any of these may not be straightforward.
Skubal’s Potential Exit
Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers recently made what could be his last start with the team. The Tigers find themselves in a tantalizing position, as they’re in the hunt for a wild-card spot.
However, with Skubal set to enter free agency, there’s speculation that the Tigers might want to secure something in return for him rather than let him go without compensation. This coveted trade could impact not just the Tigers but the entire league.
Interestingly, Skubal recently reached his 1,000th career strikeout, adding a memorable highlight to what might be his final game for Detroit.
