They’re aiming for the double.
A new Trader Joe’s has opened directly across the street from one of the chain’s oldest locations in Los Angeles. Interestingly, the company plans to keep both stores operating, which has left many customers puzzled.
The long-established Sherman Oaks store now shares the name “Sherman Oaks Too” and is prominently featured on Trader Joe’s website. It’s located at the intersection of Riverside Drive, just a stone’s throw from the busy US Highway 101 in the San Fernando Valley.
The original store, which opened in 1973—only six years after the supermarket chain was founded—has a quaint charm compared to its newer counterpart that launched earlier this month.
On the other hand, the new Trader Joe’s took over a mixed-use residential building situated right across the street, catering to customers who frequent the area.
Despite the close proximity, customer opinions vary widely. Many have taken to social media, expressing their surprise and confusion about why two stores would be established so close to each other.
“We’ve had a fantastic relationship with our Sherman Oaks customers for 52 years. Our plan is to keep both stores up and running. Both offer a fun shopping experience, although they differ in layout and parking facilities,” the company stated.
Although Trader Joe’s is well known for its similar product offerings, the new location features some additional perks that might attract customers away from the beloved original store.
The “Sherman Oaks Too” location includes modern elements, complete with social media-friendly murals, an underground parking garage, and a versatile layout to handle a growing number of shoppers.
To improve shopping flow, this new store also boasts wider walkways and higher ceilings, enhancing the shopping experience, as reported in a walkthrough by SFGate.
“Sherman Oaks Too” is part of a broader expansion for Trader Joe’s this year, with multiple new openings nationwide including a recently added location on Staten Island.
“Since Trader Joe’s began in 1967, we’ve consistently been in growth mode. Over time, we’ve expanded significantly. Our goal remains to provide as many people as possible with great values,” the company added.
Unlike in Los Angeles, the Staten Island location on Richmond Avenue doesn’t have space for another Trader Joe’s directly across the street.
