Tragic Golf Cart Incident Near Atwood Lake

An Ohio woman crashed a golf cart into a lake with three children aboard, leading to the heartbreaking discovery of her four-year-old son and husband, officials have reported.

The incident unfolded on Saturday at Atwood Lake, near Atwood Marina West, roughly 85 miles southeast of Cleveland. The woman, accompanied by her 15-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old twin sons, drove the golf cart into the water, according to Sheriff Orvis Campbell from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.

The children managed to escape the water. However, when authorities arrived, the mother expressed concern, mentioning a conversation with God. It became apparent, the sheriff’s office stated, that the crash into the water was intentional. The family, who are reportedly Amish, had visited the lake for the weekend.

Witness statements and conversations with family members indicated that the four-year-old boy and the husband were missing, triggering a search operation that turned up the child’s body in a boat dock at the lake’s bottom.

Authorities conducted extensive searches, but initial attempts to locate either the boy or the husband were unsuccessful. Campbell mentioned the situation shifted as investigators pieced together accounts from various witnesses, implying possible foul play.

On Sunday, witnesses reported seeing the mother and her husband together at the boat dock where the child was discovered. A newly initiated search using sonar equipment eventually led to the husband’s body being found about 50 yards from the dock.

Following the discovery, his body was recovered and sent to the coroner’s office, while investigators continued their inquiries. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but the coroner’s office plans to release identities once family notifications are completed.

The mother is currently hospitalized due to various mental health issues, while her other children have been released back to family.
