Hours before a tragic car accident in Nigeria, Anthony Joshua shared a video of himself playing table tennis with his friend, Latif Ayodele. This unfortunate incident led to the deaths of both Ayodele and another teammate, Sheena Gami, while Joshua was hospitalized.
In a statement released by Matchroom Boxing, it was confirmed that Joshua was involved in a car crash in Lagos. “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic passing of two close friends and team members, Sheena Gami and Latif Ayodele,” the statement read.
The organization also mentioned that Joshua sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. Thankfully, he is reported to be in stable condition and will remain under observation.
Offering condolences, the statement continued, “Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the families and friends of all those affected, and we ask that their privacy be respected at this incredibly difficult time.”
According to Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Oglolowo, Joshua, age 36, was in the backseat of a Lexus when a tire burst. This caused the driver to lose control and crash into a stationary vehicle, as reported to ESPN.
The Federal Road Safety Corps also provided preliminary findings that indicated the car was speeding and attempted an overtaking maneuver prior to the collision, labeling these actions as serious traffic offenses.
Images have surfaced showing the damaged vehicle and Joshua sitting in the backseat covered in glass shards before being taken to the hospital.
A witness stated that both Gami and Ayodele died “on the spot” following the crash.
Joshua had just traveled back to Nigeria with friends after a recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami, where he knocked Paul out in the sixth round of their highly publicized fight.
Matchroom Boxing identified Gami and Ayodele as part of Joshua’s team. Ayodele’s Instagram featured behind-the-scenes moments from training sessions, with his last post on December 27 emphasizing the importance of enjoying life between pursuing goals.
Ayodele described himself on Instagram as a personal trainer and fitness model. Just about a week ago, he shared a photo of himself and Joshua stretching together.
Gami was recognized as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and his last posts reflected moments of training and candid shots from the ring, including a caption that stated, “Levels still matter.”
