Trans athlete debate: 2 California high schools changing sports organizations

Two high schools in California are opting out of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) due to a new policy banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. Truckee High School and North Tahoe High School, located near the California-Nevada border, made this decision as reported recently.

A representative from Truckee, Amber Burke, conveyed that the change aligns with California laws concerning sex discrimination. She pointed out that, “As a California school district, we need to follow California laws,” referring to the recent NIAA policy changes that conflict with these laws.

The Truckee Tahoe Unified School District communicated with parents about how Nevada’s regulations conflict with California law, particularly mentioning AB 1955, which protects students’ rights to privacy and prohibits discrimination.

In April, the NIAA instituted a new gender eligibility policy that restricts trans athletes from participating in women’s sports, allowing only biological females to compete. This marks a significant shift from previous regulations that permitted trans athletes to participate in girls’ and women’s sports.

The schools will be joining the Inter-California Governance Federation, which intends to uphold gender qualification policies allowing biological males to compete against females in sports. This is in stark contrast to the recent NIAA decision.

An investigation released recently showed a majority of Californians oppose allowing biological male trans athletes in women’s competitions. California Governor Gavin Newsom acknowledged the challenges surrounding the fairness of having trans athletes in women’s sports but emphasized the importance of supporting the transgender community.

The NIAA Executive Director, Tim Jackson, confirmed that the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District has started the withdrawal from their association and that they are committed to facilitating a smooth transition while continuing to support all member schools and their athletes.

As they proceed, the focus will be on solidifying the athletic schedule for the upcoming fall season and maintaining clear communication among all parties involved in this change.
