Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Hiker

A man transitioning to live as a woman has admitted to murdering a female hiker, Lauren Heike, in Phoenix, Arizona. His confession reveals that he felt jealousy over her looks.

Zion Teasley, 25, noted in his journal prior to the 2023 incident that he was grappling with his gender identity and sexual orientation, recognizing it as a challenge to live within the confines of a Christian life. Reports indicate that his attorney addressed him as “she” in court.

Teasley expressed feelings of depression upon seeing beautiful women, stating he felt trapped in a male body.

Interestingly, during an initial police interview, he denied knowing anything about Heike except from news reports, oddly mentioning, “That’s what I would want to look like.”

A social media user criticized a news outlet for omitting Teasley’s biological sex in their headline.

Teasley eventually pled guilty to the murder of the 29-year-old woman, stabbing her multiple times while she was hiking. At the time, he was on probation following a prison sentence for armed robbery and other convictions. Surveillance footage captured him fleeing the scene.

Heike sustained 15 stab wounds, along with defensive injuries on her hands and forearms, according to reports. Her neighbors identified her as a familiar face in the hiking community.

Authorities noted that while Teasley lived near the trail, he did not know Heike personally. DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene. Additionally, he has a history of charges, including one for possessing child pornography. A burglary charge dating back to 2020 was dismissed as part of his plea deal.

Detectives found that Teasley had recently been terminated from his job due to accusations of aggressive behavior towards female coworkers and potential theft. Court documents indicated that a previous employer recognized him from surveillance footage, showing him in clothing believed to be stolen from the workplace.

Footage shared by media outlets featured Teasley running from the murder scene, while Heike’s family expressed their profound sorrow over her death.

Teasley’s guilty plea was part of an agreement that spares him from the death penalty. Heike’s relatives supported this decision, as it meant they wouldn’t have to endure a lengthy trial filled with traumatic details of the incident.

Records indicate that Teasley was previously associated with the U.S. Marine Corps, though a statement revealed he had entered recruit training in 2019 but had not completed boot camp, with no further details provided for privacy reasons.
