Uncertainty Surrounds Nicolas Fernandez-Merkau’s Future with NYCFC
Questions linger about whether Nicolas Fernandez-Merkau of New York City FC truly wishes to leave the team, especially after reports emerged suggesting he had asked for a transfer.
Following the club’s 2-1 victory against the Columbus Crew, coach Pascal Jansen deflected inquiries about the transfer situation during a post-match press conference, suggesting that athletic director Todd Dunivant would be more suited to address the issue.
This match marked NYCFC’s return to play after the World Cup break. Reports indicated that Fernandez-Merkau expressed his desire to part ways with the club. On Tuesday, it was mentioned that NYCFC had turned down transfer offers totaling $18 million for the player, which apparently influenced his choice not to renew his contract with the team.
Details about which specific league or team made these offers remained undisclosed. Fernandez-Merkau joined NYCFC during the previous summer and has a contract extending until 2029.
Although Jansen didn’t delve into the reports directly, he highlighted Fernandez-Merkau’s performance against Columbus as a reflection of his current mindset. “If you look at Nico’s performance within the team he was playing today, which is his team and has been for over a year now, you can see where his heart is,” Jansen explained. “He had a great performance and a big impact on the game. It shows he’s putting his energy into performing for and with the team—that’s what he needs to do.”
Fernandez-Merkau scored the opening penalty in the 28th minute, marking his 11th goal of the MLS season and keeping him among the league’s top scorers. In fact, he has found the net in four of the last five regular-season matches.
Earlier this season, his impressive form seemed to draw interest from Portuguese teams like Sporting CP and SL Benfica. Jansen had previously commented on the possibility of outside interest, stating, “I don’t know if there’s any interest,” but admitted that it wasn’t surprising given the player’s talent.
He reiterated this perspective, emphasizing on Wednesday, “He’s a great player, so there’s always going to be interest in a great player with high quality. It’s something we have to get used to, and we’ll handle it as usual.”
