Reassessing Transgender Advocacy Among Progressives
Some early supporters of government backing for progressive movements are urging that progressives return to fundamental principles in advancing the cause of transgender rights.
In a recent article, an advocacy piece highlighted the importance of expanding the coalition of Americans who believe in the dignity and equal protection of transgender individuals. Mara Keisling, who founded the National Center for Transgender Equality in 2003, emphasized this need for growth.
This shift in strategy acknowledges that supporting transgender issues may be undermining other progressive causes, notably by potentially aiding in the re-election of President Donald Trump in 2024.
Keisling acknowledged the need for a primary focus on education while simultaneously working on legislative core civil rights protections. She mentioned that in areas like sports participation and children’s healthcare access, more work is needed to gain public understanding and support. It’s essential, she believes, to adopt the most effective approaches to win over a broader audience.
She urged elected officials to prioritize advocacy for transgender rights over using these issues as a means of political messaging or purity tests. Instead of pursuing messaging bills, the emphasis should be on building larger coalitions to counteract harmful anti-trans policy amendments in essential legislation and ensure key nondiscrimination protections are upheld.
However, the question remains whether progressives can truly step back from what some may see as a misdirected focus on transgender advocacy without seeking out new causes for their support.
Some cite that many progressives perceive their support for transgender rights as part of a moral superiority narrative, often targeting conservatives, particularly within Trump’s Republican Party. This could be seen as an effort by Democrats to engage the progressive base while potentially providing Republican candidates with a topic for their election campaigns.
Establishment Republicans have also come to understand the sentiments of conservatives; they realize that portraying the Democratic Party as primarily focused on inclusivity for men in women’s sports and spaces can resonate during campaigns.
The discourse surrounding transgenderism is complex, often described as both revolutionary and imposing, requiring government endorsement of individual claims to gender identity. This stance raises questions about the implications of identity politics on women’s spaces, highlighting conflicting perspectives on biological differences.
In practice, this ideology asserts that individuals can access women’s spaces, like locker rooms and sports teams whenever they wish, reshaping societal norms based on a small minority’s preferences.
Recent polling by the left-leaning Searchlight Institute revealed a nuanced public view: while there’s significant sympathy for transgender adults’ rights, there is considerable alarm over the implications for children influenced by transgender claims, alongside a general discomfort with transgender ideologies.
For instance, 70% of respondents, including a notable percentage of Trump voters, agreed that transgender individuals should be free from discrimination. Yet, this support appears cautious: nearly half of respondents believed that prioritizing safety for transgender individuals may conflict with recognizing their gender identity.
Only about 32% of those advocating for safety saw support for gender identity as integral to that safety. This suggests that even attempts to gauge support for transgender rights yield mixed results.
Support for single-sex sports and restrooms in schools was marked, but views on how to address children’s questions about gender identity were less clear, with many preferring to involve parents in discussions.
Furthermore, strong opposition appeared towards gender-related surgeries for minors, contrasting sharply with majority support for such services for adults.
Women, in particular, showed greater concern for safety pertaining to transgender individuals compared to men, indicating differing perspectives on the issue.
Interestingly, numerous surveys indicate that support for transgender advocates has been decreasing since 2016, despite backing from many in the media.
The Searchlight Research poll conducted with over a thousand likely voters indicated a margin of error, hinting at an evolving public opinion landscape regarding transgender advocacy.
