Smoking and vaping are not allowed on flights, but the rules around smoke-free nicotine pouches can vary by airline. According to the TSA, these pouches can be carried in both carry-on and checked luggage, but airlines themselves make the call on whether or not to permit their use during flights.

Airlines including American, United, Alaska, Southwest, JetBlue, and Spirit have yet to explicitly state their policies on nicotine pouches on their websites, based on recent reviews. A discussion arose on Reddit in a “R/Delta” forum after a passenger shared their experience using Zyn pouches during a Delta flight.

The user recounted, “I was asked to spit out my Zyn on the flight. Did you know that was a thing?” They explained it was a first-class flight – though they noted that wasn’t really the point – and the crew had offered a cup for them to dispose of the pouch. “They mentioned it was because it’s considered a tobacco product, so I complied,” the passenger said.

The incident sparked a conversation in the comments section, with other users weighing in on similar experiences. One remarked, “Perhaps it looked like you had a dip in your lips,” while another countered that Zyn isn’t a cigarette and should be acceptable on planes.

Yet, there’s a bit of confusion over the rules. One commenter argued about the practicality of spitting into a cup versus just using the pouch discreetly. “I see many people using them as long as they aren’t obvious about it in front of the flight attendants,” someone shared. “It’s odd that no one stops you from using nicotine gum or patches, yet there’s this issue with Zyn.”

Interestingly, a user mentioned seeing advertisements for Zyn in the seatback shopping magazines during a recent United flight. They questioned whether flight attendants truly understand what the product is, suggesting that since it resembles gum or mints, it doesn’t seem like a big deal.

According to Delta’s Carriage Agreement, the airline has a strict policy prohibiting smoking as well as all smokeless tobacco products, which includes e-cigarettes and any similar items. In a statement, a Delta spokesperson confirmed that this extends to smokeless pouches and gum. The ongoing debate around the use of these products on flights highlights a mix of personal experiences and differing interpretations of airline policies.
