Traveling with food: TSA permits pizza, donuts, pies, and even live lobsters

TSA’s Food Guidelines for Travelers

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently reminded travelers about what foods they can and cannot take with them on flights. On Monday, they shared some “breakfast trip tips” on their X account, humorously advising that donuts, while tempting, shouldn’t be brought along.

In their post, they included a quirky image of Homer Simpson enjoying a donut while waiting in the security line. The catchy message stated, “Donuts are G2G (good to go) with a carry-on or checked bag, whatever topping you choose,” which is, well, a bit humorous if you think about it.

The TSA has introduced guidelines regarding foods for traveling. They’ve listed around 60 items that can be carried in either carry-on or checked bags, though certain restrictions do apply. For instance, travelers can pack things like pies, cakes, pizza, solid cheese, pre-cooked meats, cookies, crackers, candies, and cereals. But, they emphasize that it’s solid foods—no liquids or gels, which makes a lot of sense when you think about airport security.

The TSA notes that keeping these items organized is essential, as they can create clutter and make it harder for x-ray machines to get clear images.

Interestingly, even live lobsters are allowed to travel, provided they’re stored in clear, spill-proof containers. However, TSA officers will visually inspect them at checkpoints, so it’s wise to familiarize yourself with your airline’s policies on transporting such delicacies before heading to the airport.

On a lighter note, tamales can be packed without any fuss. Some more tricky items like coffee, creamy cheese, canned foods, gravy, ice cream, and hummus can be carried as long as they weigh less than 3.4 ounces. It’s always a good idea to double-check, as guidelines can be a bit confusing.

Regarding fresh fruits and vegetables, they’re generally allowed, but travelers to certain locations, like from the US Virgin Islands to Hawaii, should be cautious. There are restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of pests, which is something many might not think about when packing snacks.

In essence, while packing for a trip, it’s best to keep these TSA guidelines in mind. After all, nobody wants their snacks to be the reason for a delay at security! It’s certainly worth the effort to ensure a smooth experience. Happy travels!
