Podcast Insights on Travis Kelce’s Future
This week, podcast hosts got together to record their latest episode.
One particularly notable comment has left NFL fans pondering Kelce’s future in the league.
The podcast host is Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. After a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday, the Chiefs are out of playoff contention. This means that Kelce will be watching the playoffs from home for the first time since his rookie season in 2014.
In that same game, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL. This injury not only ends Mahomes’ season but raises questions about his readiness for the start of the 2026 season.
Kelce discussed the injury on this week’s episode of the new heights podcast, expressing hope for Mahomes’ recovery.
“He’s going to come back stronger than ever,” Kelce said about Mahomes. “I hope the Chiefs get him back as soon as possible. I know right now it’s Week 1 of the next season, so I believe he’ll do everything he can to get back on the field for the Chiefs quickly.”
What stood out to many, though? Kelce’s use of “Chiefs” instead of “us.”
Speculation about Kelce’s possible retirement has lingered over the past few seasons. This included discussions before Super Bowl LIX. Ultimately, after the Chiefs’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelce decided to return for another season instead of stepping away. While he displayed some signs of slowing down last year—with just 823 receiving yards, the lowest of his career—this season, he has shown glimpses of his younger self.
His performances became particularly notable after the catch, with an average of 6.1 yards after the catch heading into Week 16, his best since the 2021 season.
Actually, the last couple of seasons are the only times he’s surpassed 6.0 in that category.
His co-host on the podcast, brother Jason Kelce, shared thoughts on his brother’s situation during Monday Night Football.
“In my opinion, for that decision to be made, I’ve got to step away from the game for a while,” Jason remarked. “Just play these last three games and enjoy being with your teammates and coaches. Whether Travis comes back next year or not, this team will look different. So, let’s savor the moment.”
“Let it sink in. Over time, you’ll figure it out. There’s a lot of emotion at the end of the season, especially considering the way things went. It’s all so fresh right now. Stepping back can help you think things through, and clarity will come.”
Nevertheless, with Mahomes’ future uncertain, rumors about Kelce’s retirement will likely continue to swirl around him. His choice of words in the recent podcast episode fuels these speculations.
We might get a clearer picture of his plans in the weeks ahead. However, with the Chiefs now out of the playoffs, it’s possible Kelce’s playing time will be limited in the remaining games, especially to safeguard other key players from injury. He might even skip a game or two to prepare for the offseason and ensure he’s fit for 2026.
If Kelce does take the field for all three remaining games as a sort of farewell tour, that might just give us the answers we’re looking for.
