Travis Kelce Reflects on Season and Future

On Sunday, after the Kansas City Chiefs were eliminated from the playoffs and with Patrick Mahomes sidelined for the season, Travis Kelce took a long and thoughtful walk back to the locker room.

Despite being on course for his lowest receiving stats since 2015, Kelce, a 10-time Pro Bowler, is having a decent season. He has recorded 67 receptions for 797 yards and five touchdowns. So, for a 36-year-old NFL star, those numbers are pretty impressive. Yet, it hasn’t led to many wins for the Chiefs.

As the season nears its end, conversations about Kelce’s potential retirement will likely ramp up, especially with his brother Jason Kelce commenting during an ESPN broadcast. Jason, a former center for the Philadelphia Eagles, shared his thoughts on the matter, saying, “Yeah, I’m curious about that too. In my view, you need to step away from the game for a bit to make a clear decision. Play these last three games, enjoy the time with your team and coaches. Whether you’ll return or not, things will look different next season. So soak up these final games and let it all settle in.”

Travis has provided some insight into when he’d like to decide about his future in football. He mentioned, “Regardless of whether I come back or not, or if the team wants me back, I want to ensure the Chiefs have a fair chance. I’d prefer to make that choice before free agency starts so they can effectively manage their draft picks and fill the roster.”

Reflecting on the season’s emotions, he stated, “It’s going to take time. There’s so much sentiment around these moments, particularly given how this season has gone. I mean, the team’s record in close games hasn’t been great. Right now, everything feels too immediate. We need to step back and think through it all. Then, the clarity will come.” He concluded that he wouldn’t dwell on his decision until the season wraps up, hinting that everything would reveal itself in due time.
