Rookie NFL Player Supports Persecuted Christians
TreVeyon Henderson, a rookie running back for the New England Patriots, is leveraging his position to raise awareness for persecuted Christians worldwide. He wore custom cleats during the team’s Monday game to show support for Global Christian Relief, a nonprofit that offers various forms of assistance—like emergency aid, housing, and legal help—to those facing persecution. This organization was previously known as Open Doors USA.
The cleats were part of the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats initiative, which lets players promote causes they care about through personalized footwear during games. Henderson’s shoes featured a world map, an image of a drop of blood, and a Biblical reference from Matthew 5:10, along with the Global Christian Relief logo.
In a tweet, Henderson emphasized their partnership with Global Christian Relief, noting the struggles many persecuted Christians endure, including loss of life, family, and homes. He underscored their endurance and patience despite such adversity.
Reflecting on his beliefs, Henderson shared in a video that reading the Bible revealed to him the ongoing persecution Christians face today—a theme Jesus warned about. He mentioned how the blood drops on his cleats symbolize both Christ’s sacrifice and the sacrifices made by those in the persecuted church.
He remarked, “This really symbolizes the faithfulness of the persecuted church. Despite the blood shed, their faith remains unshaken.” He also referred to Matthew 5:10, which speaks to the blessings of those who are persecuted for righteousness.
Henderson drew a comparison between the challenges faced by Christians abroad and the relatively minor difficulties individuals experience in the U.S., stating, “They’re still faithful to Christ. They’re still trusting.” The Patriots triumphed over the New York Giants with a score of 33-15, as Henderson accumulated 67 rushing yards and caught three passes totaling 19 yards.
