Tropicana Las Vegas ceasing operations this spring to make way for new ballpark

Tropicana’s final days are in full swing after its owners announced a closing date ahead of the demolition of the new professional baseball stadium.

Starting April 2, just days before the resort’s 67th anniversary, the sound of slot machines will no longer be heard on the resort’s casino floor on the Las Vegas Strip.

Bally’s hasn’t said how quickly demolition will begin after the store closes, but the closing timeline has moved much faster than expected.

Approximately 500 employees will be affected as a result of the closure. Most of them are members of the Culinary Union, which did not immediately respond to Fox Business’ request for comment, but a spokesperson told FOX 5 it is ready.

Workers who stay until their last day on the job will receive $2,000 per year of service as part of their severance package, plus six months of free health care, a union spokesperson said. Those who choose not to receive severance benefits will receive a payout of up to $15,000 and the opportunity to work in a new facility.

Despite being owned by Bally’s, Tropicana is operated as a Hilton DoubleTree. Hilton did not immediately respond to Fox Business’ request for comment on the announced closure date.

Major League Baseball announced approval of the move to Las Vegas in November, and this year will be the last time the Oakland Athletics will play at the Oakland Coliseum. If the team moves to Las Vegas, Oakland will no longer be home to a professional sports team.
