School Bus Incident Causes Chaos

It could be described as a school bus ride from hell.

A 12-year-old student recounted the events of a recent ride home on a bus from the Calaveras Unified School District. “Everyone was screaming and stuff because they were excited to get off the bus,” he shared with a local news station after the chaotic incident.

The situation escalated when another student decided to exit the bus through a window, prompting the bus driver to intervene. “That’s when the bus driver was like, ‘Sit down, roll up the windows,'” the student explained.

The students stayed on the bus for about an hour while a gathering crowd of parents arrived. One parent, Nichole Wellington, received a distressing call from her son on the bus and quickly drove there to demand his release. “I went right to the door, and I was like, ‘Dude, open the door. Let me have my kid.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m not doing that,'” she recalled.

To help her son, Wellington eventually permitted him to climb out of the bus through a window, while she remained waiting outside. “If he would have handled that situation and gave the parents their kids that were there, I think it probably would have went a little bit differently than it did,” she said.

Footage captured by students showed the chaotic scene, which included both students escaping through windows and a parent confronting the driver after climbing in. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to the commotion. A parent was arrested for vandalism after striking the bus door and breaking the glass. It was noted that some students also exited through open windows, although the sheriff’s office emphasized that this should only happen during emergencies.

Another parent present, Rebecca Glover, whose children were on the bus, encouraged her kids to remain seated and expressed support for the driver’s decision to prioritize student safety. “There was not just one child they had to think of,” Glover pointed out. “They had to think of every single child on that bus at that time.”

The school district has stated that the incident stemmed from concerns regarding student behavior but didn’t elaborate further. Superintendent Kassie Meeks commented, “Yesterday, student behavior concerns on a district bus escalated and ultimately required law enforcement involvement.” The incident resulted in disruptions to one bus route the following day.

Wellington later suggested that having another adult on the bus could improve student management, allowing drivers to concentrate on driving. “I do feel that maybe that bus driver, especially when he’s driving, should not have to deal with all those kids by himself,” she stated.

Glover, however, expressed her belief that responsibility should lie more with the students and their families: “Parents are now sending their children to school to be parented instead of parenting their children at home, and that is a concern.”
