Truck Driver from Haiti Allegedly Caused Death of PA State Trooper in Accident

Fatal Crash Involving Pennsylvania State Trooper

A commercial truck driver from Massachusetts has been implicated in the death of a Pennsylvania State Police trooper following a catastrophic crash on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. Reports suggest that the driver, identified as a Haitian citizen, is residing in the U.S. without legal status.

Trooper Michael Pahila Jr. lost his life during a safety inspection of a different truck when he was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by 33-year-old Michael Bonn from Brockton, Massachusetts. The collision occurred when Bonn’s truck veered off the roadway, colliding with Trooper Pahila’s vehicle, which was stationed on the shoulder.

Witnesses stated that Bonn’s truck hit Pahila, pinning him beneath its front bumper, subsequently igniting a fire. Fortunately, nearby construction workers acted swiftly to rescue Pahila from the flames, but he succumbed to his injuries soon after being transported to a hospital.

Authorities have taken Bonn into custody, and he faces multiple charges, including:

  • murder by vehicle
  • aggravated assault by vehicle
  • reckless endangerment
  • manslaughter
  • reckless driving
  • careless driving
  • failure to comply in emergency response areas
  • violating lane use regulations
  • disregarding traffic control devices

Officials from Homeland Security mentioned that Bonn entered the U.S. as an immigrant parolee in July 2024 but never received Temporary Protected Status. He faced a termination of that parole in June 2025 and opted not to leave the country afterward. Despite this, Massachusetts issued him a commercial driver’s license, which was renewed even after an order for his expulsion.

Following his arrest in relation to Trooper Pahila’s death, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Bonn to prevent his release.

A spokesperson for American Truckers United expressed concerns about the implications of lax licensing practices. Shannon Everett noted, “This tragedy underscores the severe risks involved when proper checks aren’t enforced… We urge Congress to pass Dalila’s Act, which aims to revoke improperly issued licenses and ensure that only qualified drivers are on the roads.”

Trooper Pahila, remembered as a dedicated officer with two decades of service, is mourned by his community. Bonn is currently held at the Schuylkill County Jail and is awaiting his next court appearance on July 16, with a bond set at $700,000.
